We think DS may have a milk allergy or lactose intolerance. We've tried lactose free milk and soy milk but he still has constant diarrhea (so maybe a soy allergy too). We have an appt with the allergist next week, but in the meantime I'm trying to figure out what to give him. We tried just water and juice, but he won't really drink water, and I hate giving him all that juice, even though I dilute it. So I got some rice milk. I know it's not as good as regular milk, but at least it has the vitamin D and calcium. Does anyone else use rice milk?
It's all really weird, since he was on milk-based formula before. But that's a different post ![]()
Re: Anyone use rice milk?
Yep - my son drinks rice milk and loves it. We couldn't give him cow's milk as he has a dairy protein allergy (would get hives and diaper rash whenever he would eat anything dairy). When I weaned him off of breast milk at 15 months, I put him on soy milk per his doctors suggestion. Boy, was that a mistake. He had TERRIBLE diaper rash and super yucky blow out diapers. We talked to his doctor again and she told us to put him on rice milk. It's supposed to be easier for him to digest. It has been working great. He absolutely loves it. I buy the organic, original flavor (not vanilla) rice milk that is enriched with all sorts of vitamins from Trader Joe's. I have found that Trader Joe's has the 32 oz carton for $1.69 (my local grocery store has it for $3.15 - so I was super happy to find it a lot cheaper elsewhere) and that will last him 2 days (gets four 4 ounce sippy cups a day).
Good luck!
Thank you! Our store had the organic regular kind and the non-organic vanilla kind. I got the vanilla, thinking it would taste better, but I'd rather have the organic. I might try it next time. We don't have Trader Joe's here, but I'll check Sam's and Costco. DS had the same reaction to the soy milk, it was terrible!
The one thing I noticed was that rice milk has very low fat, and I know they need those fats that are found in regular whole milk. Do you suppliment his diet to get that extra fat, or just not worry about it? Originally my pedi only wanted him on whole milk for that reason, so I feel like we should fatten up his diet if we stay with the rice milk.
We do a combo of soy/rice milk due to dairy allergy (and my desire to decrease the amount of soy). So she doesn't drink the rice milk straight, I mix it in with the soy since she started on that. I do the organic plain and she loves it all. Everything I've ever bought has a bunch of added vitamins and calcium.
I did ask my dr. about the fat content because whole milk has 8 grams of fat/serving, soy milk 4 grams/serving, and rice milk 2.5/grams per serving. We actually had to have a bunch of testing done on my DD because she basically hasn't gained any weight for 7 months...she's fine. In part I think it's because of the no dairy thing. However, my pediatrician said not to add any extra fat just keep doing a healthy diet (once we made sure nothing else was going on). I should say she's not underweight, still 45 percentile, just wasn't gaining (obviously she quite large to start). One thing I did start on my own due to this concern is sunbutter (like peanut butter but made from sunflower seeds). It has lots of the good fat in it.We do give her that every day or two.
My daughter has a milk protein allergy and so we do Soy during the day and then use rice milk for cooking.
When I buy the rice milk I get the organic original flavor. She used to just drink the rice milk and no Soy but I live in a very rural area and the Soy is just more accesible.
We cook all of our food now with rice milk, even the stuff that we eat. We also use vegan butter because our daughter can't even handle butter her allergy is that bad.
I have a list of dairy-free foods if you are interested in it. Email me at amandajog at hotmail dot com.
