My cousin used balloons. She blew them up and put them in the crib, so the next time the cat went into the crib her claws would pop the balloons and it totally freaked her out. Since then, she has been out of the crib.
I was wondering the same thing about my cats. My sister-in-law bought a net-screening thing that fits over top of the crib to keep the cats out. She is letting me borrow it. I'm not sure where she got it, but I bet if you google it, you will be able to find it. It fits pretty securely, so it shouldn't be a danger to the baby or anything. Good luck.

Squirt bottle. Each time they go into or near the crib, give them a squirt with water. Worked great on our cats.
Ditto. The only other thing you can do, aside from just closing the door, is get a crib cover. They are sold at most retailers. It works kinda like a canopy for your crib. And it looks kinda like mosquito netting. It has lots of air holes and fits tight around the crib. And the baby has plenty of room and is in no danger.
My friends put a screen door over the regular door. Worked great and they also used it for baby gate when the child got older. It was a stock door at home depot, and I think it cost less than $35 total, with hinges.
As soon as we put the crib together I put stuff in it so the cat couldn't get in it. Right now there's a bouncy chair and car seat in it. The cat hasn't even attempted to get in with that stuff being in there.

I think I might be more concerned by the fact that your H thinks the cat can read... Just sayin'...
I've seen these online and was going to suggest the same thing. Here's one as an example: https://www.amazon.com/Tots-Mind-Cozy-Crib-White/dp/B00014PLAY
Put the crib in the nursery until the baby comes.
When the baby comes, stop allowing cats in your bedroom. If the dog eats the food, figure out a better place to put it.

And you OBVIOUSLY have such a keen sense of humor....
