How do you know if you have a mastitis?

I know that when I pumped 1.5 weeks ago my milk was pink so I must have had an open wound.  Now my breast is very tender and I was assuming it was a clogged duct (and it might be) but how do you know if you have a mastitis vs. a clogged duct?  I did feel run down last night and tonight and I don't feel 100% but I might just be reading too much into it.  TIA!

    grrrreat.... lol

  • i thought i was sick- i had a fever, the chills, a hard lump, it was so painful...
  • when I got it I had a pain in my breast, it hurt to nurse, then I had a fever of 103. 3 I thought I had the flu but my breast hurt.  I called the doctor and they said it was mastitis, called in a antibotic told me to get on bedrest for 24 hours and nurse as much as possible.  You should call your doctor and ask.

  • Do you have any redness on your breast, specifically a pie shaped section?
  • Hi:  When this situation happened for me, my doctor told me that if I didn't have a fever, I didn't have infection.  Assuming you don't have a fever, you still can turn it around on your own.  She advised me to get into the shower for 30-45 minutes, and massage the affected breast.  Once you are out of the shower, feed the baby and then pump.  Repeat until the soreness goes away.  Good luck.
