How do you know if you have a mastitis?

I know that when I pumped 1.5 weeks ago my milk was pink so I must have had an open wound.  Now my breast is very tender and I was assuming it was a clogged duct (and it might be) but how do you know if you have a mastitis vs. a clogged duct?  I did feel run down last night and tonight and I don't feel 100% but I might just be reading too much into it.  TIA!

i thought i was sick- i had a fever, the chills, a hard lump, it was so painful...

when I got it I had a pain in my breast, it hurt to nurse, then I had a fever of 103. 3 I thought I had the flu but my breast hurt.  I called the doctor and they said it was mastitis, called in a antibotic told me to get on bedrest for 24 hours and nurse as much as possible.  You should call your doctor and ask.

Do you have any redness on your breast, specifically a pie shaped section?

Hi:  When this situation happened for me, my doctor told me that if I didn't have a fever, I didn't have infection.  Assuming you don't have a fever, you still can turn it around on your own.  She advised me to get into the shower for 30-45 minutes, and massage the affected breast.  Once you are out of the shower, feed the baby and then pump.  Repeat until the soreness goes away.  Good luck.
