Will milk supply adjust to just morning and night feedings?

I am going back to work in a couple weeks and was hoping to BF DD in the mornings and at night and then formula feed during the day while at daycare.  Will my supply adjust and not leave me engorged during the day??  I'd really like her to get some BM still and I dont get a lot pumping to create a huge stash for her to use at daycare.  TIA

Re: Will milk supply adjust to just morning and night feedings?

  • There isn't a foolproof answer here.  Some women's bodies adjust and some will engorge, and some have their milk dry up!  I would recommend pumping anyways during the day.  It will help keep your supply up and then they can always feed her the BM at DC, even if it's just one bottle and the rest is formula.

I give up trying to add my kids' photos. Just know that they are adorable.

  • I am planning on doing the same thing. I have always had a great supply and have dealt with a lot of issues (clog ducts, mastitis, reflux, etc). We just started today. He went to daycare for 2 hours and took 3 oz of formula. I start full time in 2 weeks. Just plan on nursing whenever you are together to make sure your supply stays up. Also, make sure you continue with your calories and water intake. My cousin did this successfully for 7 months. Check out kellymom.com. They have a lot of info.
  • If you can pump during the day, I would rec. doing so, even if you don't get much. Your dc can have whatever you pump, then the rest can be formula. If I don't get enough for her for the next day, I have my parents (they watch her) mix it with formula to "stretch out" the bm. Or, you could just do all bm until it runs out, then formula.

Personally, I'd end up leaking at work if I didn't pump, but your body would eventually regulate, I'm sure. GL! :)

  • Unfortunately I won't be able to pump at work.. Im a teacher and we dont have anywhere private where I can pump, not to mention I dont always have a free period and only get 30 min for lunch.  I'll just try to pump/feed her right before I leave for work and right when I get home.
  • I have been doing this for 4 weeks now and it's working great.  It took me about 2 weeks for my body to regulate.  For the most part I don't feel my milk come in until 4:00 which is when I'm home to nurse anyway.  I nurse all night fine and once in the morning right before we leave.
