Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I'm CLUELESS about solids- who can help me?

I'd really like something that really spells out how much, when and what to give babies in certain age groups. It just doesn't make sense to me how to do it and how/when to increase servings and what not.

We started rice cereal last weekend, he's pretty good with the spoon, so should we do two feedings per day? Do we have to do Barley and Oatmeal as well? Or do we go from Rice cereal to fruit? But we still do the rice cereal still along with the fruit, right? Seriously, I know nothing about this stuff.

Does anyone have a good link to a website that has an actual feeding schedule I can refer to?

Or just tell me how you did it if you feel like being detailed. Tongue Tied

  • I love the book "Child of Mine" by Ellen Satter (sp?). It has a lot of advice on feeding and instilling healthy eating habits. It's not all that specific on amounts of food and exact progression of foods though.

I keep reading conflicting things. For instance, one book says to go to carrots after rice cereal, one says that carrots can have dangerous levels of nitrates. Some still say to start with vegetables, some say it's a myth. Ugh.

  • www.wholesomebabyfood.com has some good information.  If you'd like to make your own food, there's a lot of great recipes.

  • It is very confusing and I have an 8 month old. I think every child is going to be somewhat different in how much they eat. I don't think you can pinpoint that. We started with the cereals. Each week we introduced a new one. Then after a month we started veggies then fruit. I just started introducing him to meat last week (Turkey and Chicken). He eats about 8-10 TBSP per meal (3 times a day).

At 6 months it was getting him to 4 TBSP I think is the recommended amount from the info the Pedi gave me.

  • Basically, there are "first foods" and "second foods" (and so on).  It doesn't really matter in what order you introduce the first foods.  You are supposed to wait a few days between introducing new things to screen for allergies.  When you've introduced most of the "first foods," it's usually time to move on to the seconds.

Don't stress too much about serving balanced meals.  At this stage, solid foods are for experimenting and practice and fun, not nutrition.  Stop feeding him when he stops acting interested in the meal.  When you're comfortable with that, add a morning meal.  Most recommendations are that you should be working up to 3 solid meals by around 9 months.

If you make your own baby food (I highly recommend!), you can go to the store and look at the baby food jars to get ideas for foods to make and serving sizes.  www.wholesomebabyfood.com is a great website.
