Anyone get a bigger car just because of the baby?

DH is trying to convince me we should get this GMC Acadia from his work - he works at a dealership and we would get a pretty damn good deal. However, the payment is more than our current car and the car doesn't have all I want so I am saying no...but he keeps going on about how a bigger car will be so much easier with a baby......like the Camry we have is so small. He is driving me nuts today!

So, did you get a bigger car? Loving it, hating it? Does DH have a point on needing something larger?

Re: Anyone get a bigger car just because of the baby?

  • I have a 2 door Honda Civic and will use that for the baby...not sure how it will work out with a car seat in the back but the doors are large and the front seat moves all the way up so I'm sure it'll do.

We can not afford a new car/higher payment/down payment right now so I'll make it work!

  • You don't need a big car for a baby, they are very little! That said, we already have a Nissan Murano, which I love, so it will come in handy since I'm 5'10" and won't have to break my back every time I put the baby in the carseat.
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • We did. My little dodge neon was falling apart so we decided to get an SUV. We figured it would hold our family better. I got a Nissan Murano and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
  • We had planned on it, but I don't think we'll be able to afford it right now.  I drive a Beetle and DH drives a VW Rabbit - neither one is exactly spacious.  I plan on trying to make it work with my Beetle (paid off) but will swap with DH if I *need* 4 doors.  It's not ideal, but my mom dragged my brother and I around in a Dodge Colt for years, so I know it can be done.

  • We are buying a bigger one with this baby, a Dodge Grand Caravan SXT, in preparation for future children and for when we travel.  We like to camp and go on trips and already our bigger car, Our Saturn ION is full with just our stuff so we figure add a stroller and a pack and play to that and we are already out of room!

I love the Murano's too - if only he worked at a Nissan dealership and we could get this smokin deal I would sign on the dotted line right away!

  • we aren't planning to at this point. we will see how it goes. currently we both drive roomy 4-door cars. I don't really get the whole phenomenon of people freaking out and going out and buying the biggest possible SUV when a baby is on the way (and a lot of my friends have done this).

  • I have a Honda Civic sedan that we're keeping but FI is getting rid of his Honda Civic coupe.  He is currently looking at VW Passats which are larger than what we both have.  We decided to trade his in because it isn't a suitable size and he wanted a more family style car.  I am pretty excited about it and so is he.  We figured it would be better for longer-ish trips (to visit his parents) so we could fit everything.  But we're also staying within our budget.

I would look around more until you find something you both can agree on and be excited about.  I think the extra room will be extremely helpful considering the need to pack more things now with the LO on the way.

  • DH drove our new jeep and i drove a jetta. DH somehow convinced me that I should sell the jetta; and drive the Jeep full time so he can get a new bmw. a two door manual bmw at that! I dont even know how to drive a manual! I must have been drugged at the time; but that is what eneded up happening WTF? Confused
  • i had a 95 mustang so yeah we got a new car, I miss it tho.

now that we are expecting another i am looking into an even bigger car... this one just doesn't seem to fit the bill. once the trunk is full of stroller there is no room for groceries and stuff. so i am looking for a larger car to accommodate.

as long as we can keep the payment at 200 we can swing it.

  • We did.  We had been looking at getting a bigger car for awhile...DH used to have a Ford Explorer, but then he traded that in for a Toyota Camry which he loved.  I have a little Saturn SLI, so we had two smaller cars (even though the Camry was very spacious).  He missed having the space his SUV had though, and we had been thinking about trading in his Camry for something different when we got our BFP.  So happens that my car was finally paid off that same month, so we went out and got a Dodge Caravan a few weeks after our BFP (crazy, I know!).  We are now paying less for that per month than we had been paying for the Saturn and Camry combined....it is a nice car and we got it for a lot of money off.  Plus, we gave FIL the Camry, so it is still around for DH to drive when he really misses it. =)  But it is great now having all of the extra room!
  • Yes i will be upgrading my car. i have a 2-door now and will be getting a 4 door most likely Honda or Toyota

  • We traded in DH's jeep wrangler last year for a jeep patriot with the intent it would be my car and big enough for us and the baby (and ideally one more kid).  If we hadn't, we still would have our other car which is quite roomy and had 4 doors.

I have a 2 door Civic too, but we have no plans on buying anything bigger.  I would love to upgrade to a CR-V, but we are planning on buying a house in May so I'd rather not spend money on another car.

  • I drove a 2r, 3 seater dodge p/u truck.  After I got pregnant the first time we talked about having to sell it.  Unfortunately I lost that baby.  But since we knew we were going to try again we decided to upgrade before I got pregnant with this baby.

A 2dr truck just wasn't going to work with a baby!

I have  Mazda 3 and DH got a Mazda CX7.  His car was also a 2 dr but had a back seat. His car was filthy and had over 130K miles on it so it was time for him to get a new car anyway.  Baby or not.  But he opted for a little bigger car/crossover since my family lives out of state and we knew we would need a bigger car for traveling to visit them

  • I'm trying to convince DH to let me trade my Volvo S60 for either a V70 or XC70 wagon.  We have two 50lb dogs and I would really love to have the extra space.  Plus, we are constantly moving, so having a bigger car would work out nicely.

  • You don't need a bigger car right now.  A camry is plenty big for one baby.  I did get a Pilot but only because my beautiful Passat got totaled a few months before I got pg.

  • I did...kind of...I bought my MazdaSpeed3 a year and a half ago. My old car was a Saturn Ion and although it had 4 doors the back doors were half doors and it would have been a bit difficult to get a baby in and out....DH hated my car and I was ready for a new one so we went with a bigger car with 4 full size doors to accommodate for our future family.

  • We will be upgrading-hopefully with tax return $.  But I have a 2 door pick-up truck, so it's not the most family friendly vehicle.  I am looking at getting a jetta-I love them!

  • DH's Pontiac Grand Am died at the end of Dec. so we had to get a new car. He wanted another Pontiac, but I convinced him to go with a Jetta because it will be better for us as a family (I can drive the Jetta, but can't a Pontiac). Now he loves the Jetta, so it certainly worked out for the best. It's technically the same size (maybe a bit smaller in total) but the inside space is much larger.??

  • I have a two door hatchback that I will be keeping. It's DH's turn for the new car (or rather the new used car) however we aren't really big car people so he will probably be getting another four door sedan. Our car needs will probably change as our family grows but a tiny little baby isn't going to make much of a difference for a while. Once we have school age kids (plural) we may think about going bigger but right now we just can't afford and it doesn't make sense for our city lifestyle. My parents had one car, a two door Ford Escort, until I was 5 and my sister was 3.

This is what I keep saying...I am waiting on what his explanation is of having a bigger car would be to our benefit...these men I tell you - they drive me nuts!

  • Last year we were going to downsize from our Chevy Equinox, which I LOVE, to the Honda Civic which I also love. We also have DH's little  '94 Chevy p/u which is a blessing. I am happy that we did not downsize b/c we get decent gas mileage and I would rather have too much room than too little.

Once Dh's p/u dies I think we will buy a Civic, much to the chigrin of MIL who is hardcore buy american, which I am to a certain extent.

I think it really depends on what will suit your situation.

  • we were planning on it but bow we have no choice but to get a new car. i was in a car accident last month and my car was a total loss.

i had an 06 toyota carolla. so now im trying to figure out what SUV i want

  • No we aren't getting a new car.  We have two perfectly good 4 door cars and no car payments so we don't see the need.  We probably will get something bigger for baby number two.
  • We currently have a camry and an accord. My lease is up on my accord next month and we plan to get a Honda Pilot (bigger). We have been wanting to get an SUV anyway since I barely drive at all and when we do we always need more room. No one in our family or extended family has an suv and we really need one because we are always feel like we are inconveiencing other's when ask for help.

So yes, baby = bigger car. But we wouldve done it no matter what.

  • When DH got his truck in 2007 we purposefully got a Crew Cab (4 door) Ford f-150 knowing that we would be TTC and would have baby gear before the lease ran out.  I have a Pontiac G6 and I might get a smaller SUV when my lease is up but that is not until next year.  I like the size of my car now and it is great!

  • Yesterday we bought a 1997 Honda CR-V. We have a two door Olds Alero. And we just thought it would be nice to have a bigger vehicle for hauling and travelling. I had a unfortunate experience falling out of our car with a baby in hand and I don't really want to be doing that all the time. We know it can be done but we the CR-V was a great deal and our loan payments actually went down.
  • We are not buying a new car because about a year ago we bought a Hyundai Santa Fe.  It's a mid-size SUV which leaves us plenty of room.  I'm 6ft, DH is 6'2, we both have back problems, so there's no way we could only have a tiny 2 door vehicle.

  • Before I got pregnant and up until December I was driving a Nissan Sentra. I had been looking at getting a Honda Pilot (because I loved them) before we got pregnant, but once we did we went ahead and got one. I love my Pilot! DH's parents live out of state plus we have a 95 pound lab that we take with us so it made more sense to get a bigger car. DH drives a Chevy Silverado which is not too family (plus dog) friendly.
  • We have a Toyota Tacoma with the small extended cab. We are not getting another vehicle - this one is expensive enough! I am sure it will be just fine.

  • A camry is more than big enough for one baby.  Acadia's are nice, but they are gas guzzlers not to mention not quite as reliable as a camry!

  • A month after my husband and I got married we looked into buying a new car.  We are both planners, so we figured we were going to have kids in the future we wanted an SUV... we ended up buying the 2008 Scion XB, it's bigger than the years before... it's great!  Now that we are having a baby it's fantastic. I'm glad it worked out the way it did.  So technically we did buy a bigger car for baby. I hope it helps!  Smile

  • We both got new cars this summer, and kept in mind we would be trying for a baby in the fall.  He got the  gmc canyon with a full back seat, and i got a cadillac SRX.  I should say we also have a 100lbs plus puppy who is still growing and we need room for him plus stroller in the very back!

AS for the Acadia, a friend of mine has one and there is ZERO room for trunk space. It's literally like a foot deep, so your camry  actually has way more trunk space :)  But I must say it is a very beautiful car

  • 'just because of the baby' seems like a pretty good reason for getting a new car.

i have a mini cooper convertible, 2 door. i love it, but not a family friendly car. we'll be getting a new one in the next couple months

  • We upgraded from a Honda Accord to a CRV 2 years ago in preparation for having a baby AND while we could still get top-dollar trade in on the Accord (at 4 years instead of at 6).
  • I had no choice to get a bigger vehicle.
  • Well, we got rid of our 2-door Celica for a 4 door Camry. Now we're a 2 Camry family. :) Twins in the Celica was just NOT going to work.
  • Do you have the newer body style Camry?  BC I do and I love it.  My sis and I are convinced that it is bigger than her 4runner on the inside.  My cousin has the Acadia and loves it.  how about the Ford Edge?  Those are really nice.  Two of my friends just bought them and they love it.
  • We bought a Honda CRV, which I drive and my husband drives a Chevy Silverado... way to big for me to drive, hard to put a car seat in there & too tall so we definitely needed a new car.
