Really upset: Lily won't nurse...

She has been sick for a couple of days and today she has hardly nursed. ?I was hoping when she got up from her 2.5 hour nap this afternoon she would, but all she does is sob when I offer it to her. ? Also, now she has a bad raspy cough that she has never had with past colds (also she never refused to nurse), however she doesn't have a fever for the first time in over a day.

I have a call into the pedi, but I am always skeptical when I talk to a machine and not a live person. ?Especially on a Friday afternoon.

I am really upset- has anyone gone through this before? ?What did you do? I am so afraid she is going to get dehydrated.?

  • Maybe she has an ear infection? I would call if I were you. Usually not eating and sobbing is a ear pain thing.

  • Liliana went through this exactly on Monday and has the same thing that Lily seems to have. She started nursing like crazy when she woke up on Tuesday.

ETA: We took her in Tuesday morning and no ear infection and her lungs were clear.

  • I would be really concerned. ?Your pedi doesn't have an answering service? Does your pedi's hospital have a nurses line? I would call them if you don't hear from your pedi. ?If you are really concerned and don't hear from your pedi, I would go to the emergency room. ?

It is really stupid. ?Off hours you get a call back directly from a pedi, but during the day you have to leave a message on the RNP voicemail. ??

  • This happened with my DS a while back.  He wouldnt take a bottle either.  Took him to the pedi and apparently he had a bad sore throat.   A couple days of motrin helped keep the swelling and pain in check until it cleared up.

If she wont eat remember to pump so you dont risk your supply.

  • That is stupid and frustrating :( ?I hope that Lily and you are feeling better soon. ?

  • we are dealing with it now. get out a bottle and pump.  keep offering the boob but she needs fluids in the meantime.
  • She won't take a bottle either (never would), but I just managed to get an once in her with a medicine dropper. ?I am going to to do it every hour.

  • try cup feeding then.  That's what my AP/LLI people recommended to me (then they dont get the sucking so they will want to go back to that).
  • PPs have already said pretty much everything I would (try bottle, keep trying to nurse, cup feeding), but I just wanted to add that we did go through this and it turned out OK. My Lily (this post is full of Lilies) was too stuffed up and she couldn't breathe, but we kept trying. It is so upsetting, though, I know.

Oh--maybe try nursing when she's half-asleep. That worked for us. GL

  • Cat did this during her last cold.  It was the worst one she has had.  I used saline drops and the bulb syringe to clean out her nose and steamed up the bathroom to help her breath right before feedings as well.  Good luck!  Also, my pedi said as long as she had 1 wet diaper per 6 hour period and the inside of her mouth felt moist she was still hydrated.  I think I probably drover her crazy sticking my finger in her mouth to make sure she was getting enough to drink over and over again.
