Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Finger Foods

I have been dragging my feet in this issue because I am freakishly paranoid about him choking!

I need ideas.

He gets Cheerios, avacado, mango, canned peaches (in pear juice), canned pears, elbow macaroni, cantaloupe. shredded cheese. I just gave him wheat toast yesterday - he LOVED it but I was terrifies every time he took a bite.

Any suggestions? Warnings?

Thank you!!!!

Re: Finger Foods

  • peas, carrots, banana pieces, bite sized pieces of grilled cheese

That's all I can add to your list right now.  I'll see if I can come up with more

  • Funny that I didn't think of peas since I've read that everything should be "pea sized". I guess I have a "pea sized" brain!

I do give him carrots and banana. Forgot those 2. I bet he'd LOVE grilled cheese! Thanks! Should I lightly grill it (make it more crisp) or serve it a bit softer? I am SOOO freaked about him choking....

  • I make the grilled cheese the same way that I make mine.  If your DS ate toast, he'll be fine with grilled cheese.

Try to relax about the choking.  Just watch him as he eats.  If he starts coughing, let him work it out himself.  It's only time to worry if he isn't breathing/coughing/making sounds at all.  I haven't once had to perform baby Heimlich on DS, and we've been doing finger foods for 2.5 months.

I'm pretty sure there is a finger foods for baby website that someone here set up.  I don't have a link though.

  • DD loves grilled cheese! Sometimes i also make her a cream cheese sandwich. This website also has a lot of good ideas

  • Oh!  I thought of some more:

    popped blueberries

    broccoli

    cauliflower

small pieces of shredded pork or chicken, ground beef

    goldfish

  • Thanks, ladies! You know...the sad part about my choking fear... I'm a healthcare provider and have been infant/child CPR certified for years, have used both Heimlich and CPR numerous times on other people. It's just SOO different when it's your own child!!

    Thanks again!
