it's not pretentious, it's just too out there. likely to be butchered by everyone you know, not to mention those you don't know. it looks like a sci-fi name.
Just say "No" to Gryphon. Looking at it reminds me of the alternative spelling of Fat "Phat" or Fish "Phish"...fine for slang terms or a band name but NOT for a child's/adult's name.
I know 2 Griffins (both boys) and 1 Gryphon (a girl). Everytime i think of Gryphon I always think of what an unfortunate name the poor girl has, but its totally opposite for the Griffins. Spelling makes a big difference, its a super cute name though, and If my little cousin didnt have the name Id add it to my list!
I'm not actually wild about either, but as a middle ground, you could try Gryffin. All in all, though, I think any of them are just not my thing. But go with what makes you happy.
Gryphon isn't pretentiously spelled; that's the name of the mythical creature. (And the awesome SCAD tea house in Savannah. Yums.) Griffin is a surname. Both are 150% nms as a first name, but either is technically a correct spelling.
Pretentious? No -- if anything, I think it's very dungeon and dragons or something. I immediately think of the 1/2 lion, 1/2 eagle beast from mythology. Odd for a baby IMO.
At first I thought this was a joke. How terrible is Gryphon. Yuck! I find it funny that the only person who like that spelling on this poll, was the woman who had a post about liking the name Zaden and some other strangely spelled kre8tv name. Go with Griffin. PLEASE.
Gryphon is a variant spelling in Webster's dictionary for Griffin. But, I would definitely go with Griffin. It's just easier. Gryphon looks like it might have a LONG I sound.
BTW, If DD was a boy, she'd have been Griffin. I'm hoping to get it for a middle name this time around.

I Find it hard to believe im the only one in the world that likes different names. I found these names in baby books, so i KNOW im not the first one to think of them or like them, Im sorry not everyone agrees but im also glad not everyone does, how boring it would be to be in a world of Richard's and Jane's.
Re: Griffin or Gryphon
This was my reasoning for considering it! But I really don't want to stick my kid with a name that looks ridiculous.
ditto
This.
