Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Why does navy blue = two boys?

My girls have only been called boys twice in their lives. The first time, they were wearing navy blue fleece pants and striped fleece (in girly colors) sweatshirts. The second time was today, when they were wearing jeans and navy blue hoodies with yellow daisies on them. These are their only two outfits with navy blue in them and BOTH times they have worn them, they have been called boys... despite very girly colors/flowers/etc.

So, why does navy blue = boys? Very weird.

Re: Why does navy blue = two boys?

  • People see blue and dont bother to THINK. That's my theory anyway :)

When DD was about 15 months old, we were at a store. She had a pigtail on the top of her head (think Cindy Lou Who) and was wearing a light blue shirt that said "Everyone loves a blue eyed girl".

A woman walked up to us, read her shirt OUTLOUD and then said, "Awww, how sweet? Boy or girl?" Doh. ?

  • I used to dress my daughter in head to toe pink with frilly socks and a big bow on her head, and she would still get called a boy.  People are morons.  Plain and simple.
  • today my son was dressed in blue jeans, a blue and white patterned longsleeved onsie with a blue and brown sweater.  a blue blanket, a blue soother and a blue hat.  He got called a beautiful little girl.  twice.
  • I agree.  People are very "blue = boy."

But people are also idiots.  DD was wearing green cargo pants, a pink long sleeve onesie, and a pink hat one day.  It was like a bottle of pepto bismol threw up on her and then I slapped on some pants... Some idiot wandered up to me in the grocery store and asked how old my son was.  Really??

I mean, sure.  She's a baby, there's no need to gender her, and it doesn't really matter.  But still... This was one of those women with a permed ball haircut and a holiday themed sweater so I'm thinking she didn't mean it ironically...

  • I was at the grocery store with DD one time when she was about a month old, and she was wearing this light blue and white striped hat that I fell in love with and bought early on in my pregnancy. A woman came up to me and said, "What a handsome little guy!" Mind you, DD is in the carrier and facing towards me. I say, "Oh, no, she is a girl." This woman gives me the side eye and says, "BLUE? On a GIRL? You need to take that off."

And proceeds to reach into carrier and try to remove said hat off of my baby.

I about died. I slapped her hand away and walked away.

Moral of story? People are morons who think blue is only acceptable for boys.

  • dd wore purple and someone said "he's so handsome"

but one time i had her in head to toe sports outfit for her dad's favorite hockey team, teal and black. and i kept telling everyone we saw, she's a girl, just rooting for daddy's team. lol i dunno why i cared so much.

  • People don't bother to look at the children.....my ds was wearing a baby blue sweater and jeans..he was called a cute baby girl....the first time in 7 mons I was like girl..What?? it was a waiter at the 99...she said oh sorry! then i felt bad...oops

Me too. I always want to respond with "yes, I dress my boy in a bright pink dress with a bow on his head. You like?"

I totally agree. On SEVERAL occassion Mikey was called a girl when he was wearing all baby blue. I thought maybe b/c he's always had a lot of hair, but then I came to the realization people really just forget to think when they see a baby or a pregnant woman.

  • I dunno, but just today I had DD in brown pants, a pink hoodie, in a pink trimmed stroller and 3 people said "he's so cute."
  • Gracen will be perpetually called "she" because of how his name is spelled. I blame my husband.
  • around this time last year, gymboree came out with their dog park line.   The boy one was light blue and had a chocolate lab on it.   Since we have a chocolate lab, I had to get the outfit.  I was still PG and we were waiting to find out the gender.   I looked at the outfit and even though it was a little boyish, figured it was light blue and if I wound up having a girl, I would just stick a blue bow in her hair.    Well the lady behind me online saw my belly and asked how many months and the usual PG questions and said you must be having a boy while gesturing to my pile of baby blue clothes.   I said we don't know what we're having but I had to get this outfit since we have a chocolate lab.   She gasped in horror and said you can't put blue on a girl!   Like I was considering the worst crime of the century.

Oh and whenever I buy a baby girl gift, I try my best to get something other than pink.
