cereal/solids question...

when did you doc recommend starting cereal? did your DC have any issues after starting??

we just started trying organic oatmeal this week per GI's recommendation, to hopefully lower chances of allergic reaction (no soy in organic)..we did it for 2 days..ronnie hated it and only ate a little bit, joey loved it the second day and ate almost his whole tablespoon..

yesterday, the day after starting, both boys acted like they had to poop all day, even though they pooped (they are on miralax for constipation, so they shouldn't be constipated)..

last night after joey ate a lot of the cereal (about 4-5 hours later) he was screaming louder than i have ever heard him scream..i brought him to bed with me and had to hold his hand to get him to sleep, poor little fella..

im just wondering if their bellies are still too immature??

does it just take getting used to? or should i quit and try again later?

?

Re: cereal/solids question...

  • My DD was born at 32 weeks. We started rice cereal at 4 months I think per our pediatrician's recommendation. She didn't really dig it or get it for about 2-3 weeks. It helped when I added applesauce. She mowed down on it then.

It takes practice because you are introducing a spoon and solids at the same time. You can use your finger as a spoon to see if that helps. But you still have to get them used to having something hard in their mouth (spoon) and food that isn't liquid.

Now, at 6 months, DD eats a variety of cereals and fruits/veggies and is doing well.

Regarding the apparent GI issues: I think we moms tend to overanalyze our babies' poop. But, you are his mom and you know him best. But I will also say that it takes more than 1 try to get babies to do most anything. If you do it again and have the same reaction, I'd be more inclined to say it's the cereal. Why not try rice? It's more hypoallergenic than oats.

  • since the boys are on neocate..it constipates them really bad..they have to take laxative everyday, and the GI and our pedi said that oatmeal would be less constipating than rice..

i think we waited so long because they have had such bad GI issues already..

they actually take it really fine..i was amazed, they both just open their mouth and take the spoon right in! ronnie just shivers and spits the cereal right out..joey begs for more! haha?

  • My 32wkr was ready and showing all the signs at 3 months adjusted but we followed the recommendation of waiting until he was 6 months adjusted.  He took to it fine but even now at almost 3yrs is a very small eater.  He'll eat or at least try almost anything you give him but never too much of anything - even favorites like pizza.
  • Rowen my 30wkr was 6 months real age when we started rice cereal. he hated it the first time so i added bananas and then he loved it. it is common for breastfed babies to get constipated when they start solids. i don't know if your are?
