DH Christmas- What would you do?

Yesterday I found the tool chest I wanted to get DH for Christmas at an awesome price! Well, last night I brought up our Christmas budget and asked what $ amount we were set on. DH doesn't want any gifts- he said he would rather I put that $$ towards a bill and he doesn't want gifts. I'm fine with doing that- but- he still thinks he can buy me gifts! I'm upset by this- I don't want to open gifts & all he gets to do is look at a 'Paid in Full' notice! So- do I go ahead and get his gifts or pay off the bill like he wants? I want him to have a real Christmas!!!

Oh, and he won't pay off a bill with for my gift- ??

    Have you thought about getting one gift for the 2 of you?  that's what DH and I do for christmas. We just go buy one big thing.  One year we bought a new tv, a new bed, and last year we went on a vacation.  Maybe something that you need around the house, or maybe even just a weekend at a resort or something.

    I like BrookeAnn's Idea.  DH and I did that for our birthday's this year- we bought ourselves a nice TV.

    We're in the middle of a similar discussion right now too, and I can't decide.  I think I'll go ahead and get DH's gift (a Wii)... he can always return it, but I know that he wants it too much to do that.  Get the tool chest now at the good price; he can always return it.

    I like Brookes idea too. That is what we did. We got a Tv (only after talkikng about it for 2 yrs!). We still will get smaller gift to open christmas morning but that is usually clothes that we need.

    I vote for a joint gift!  We have been doing this the past few years and it has really worked out well.  Last year, we replaced the tv in our living room and bought a new surround sound system.  This year, we are going to upgrade some of our kitchen appliances.

    Well, we usually do joint gifts, and we talked about scaling down this year, so thats why we have the new budget to discuss. Thanks for all your ideas!

    I think what I'm going to do is get the tool chest, a few small things, and then pay part of a bill & have the receipt in a card.
