Nurseries and Baby Gear

changing table question

I've seen a lot of really cute nurseries where they just used a dresser and converted the top to a changing table.

I love this idea, but it just doesn't seem safe.  Seems like the changing pad could slide off the dresser too easily.

Are there any good ways to make a safe changing table dresser?  Am I just being overly worried, and should just put the changing pad on the dresser?  Anyone have a favorite dresser to use? (links are appreciated!)

Re: changing table question

  • The most common dresser I've seen used is the Ikea Hemnes, which is whatiI plan to use. I don't think it's unsafe, and you should never leave baby unattended on a changing table, anyway.

  • If you're nervous about it sliding off you could always put a rubber shelf liner below to prevent. And then yes as the other person said baby should never be on it without you right there so it shouldn't really be an issue.

We have the ikea Hemnes dresser in DD's room and just put a changing pad on top.  There is a strap that you can nail/screw into the back of the dresser on the changing pad so you can hook it on that way if you want.  We just put a piece of the gripping shelf liner under the changing pad and it works just fine (for just over 2 years now).

Like PP said, you don't leave them unattended anyway.

this is what we did, no issues yet

  • Awesome - thanks.  I didn't realize the changing pad had a hook on it :).  And the rubber liner didn't cross my mind!

I would never leave her unattended!  Just worried - especially if she's as squirmy outside as she is in! :)

  • Yep, our changing pad also came with two tabs on the back and came with screws to screw onto the dresser.

  • I've never had a problem with our changing pad sliding off the surface we use (a desk instead of a dresser) but this is partly due to the fact that we use the strap to attach it securely to the desktop.

  • My son is extremely active and squirmy, and we've never attached the changing pad. It's just sitting on top of the dresser. It has never been a problem. He's 2 now, and can just about climb down by himself, and still the changing pad has never slid off.

However I will say that his dresser is very scratched up, from the plastic buckles sliding around. If I were doing it again with the dresser, I'd put something down to protect the dresser for sure. For DD, who is due in September, I got a regular cheap changing table, not because I had a problem using the dresser with DS, but because I want something disposable and I want her dresser to stay in good shape.
