Maeve

Maeve is a total GP name for me. I'm trying to understand how hard it is for people to pronounce. I would hate for a child of mine to have to correct everyone. It seems so obvious to me how it's said, and I can't imagine how else it could be pronounced.

Anyways, is it really that out there?

Re: Maeve

  • I don't think it's weird or out there.   I've never met a Maeve so I'm guessing its pronounced like gave?   Is that right?

  • I LOVE Maeve. Can't sell it to DH.

I think it's obvious how to pronounce as well. I can imagine LO having to spell it for people.

    That's right.

  • No, I don't think it is too out there. It follows the same rules as mauve, the color.

    I adore Maeve.

I have found either people know the name or they don't.  Once they are told how to pronounce it, they have no trouble after that.

I personally don't think it is that out there but some people do ask how to say it prior to trying it, probably because it is not something they have seen before.

We are thrilled with our choice and still think it is a wonderful name.

  • I love Maeve.  I don't find it out there or hard to pronounce...

I love Maeve.  It's one of our top girl names. I've ran the name past some family and friends and no one I have found has problems pronouncing it.  I say if you love it go for it!
  • I adore Maeve. It's inexplicable to me that anyone could mispronounce it, because it seems really phonetic to me, but whenever I "tell" people (via text or IM or something) that I like it, I often get asked how to pronounce it.

  • As my Maeve is 3.5, I'll share.

When people see the name in print, they often want to call her Mauve.I believe that the 'ae' is what trips some people up.

As for pronounciation, for the most part it's be okay. I'll say, "Maeve" and people who are not used to it, will often repeat it or ask me to repeat it again. Nine of ten times I'll get, "ooh, that's different/pretty/unique". Typically it's older people who have a harder time w/ it.

  • This name is darling!  Don't let this shy you away from using it.  People can and will mispronounce most anything.

  • Thanks for all the replies. They were all really helpful. I'll keep it on my list, not so easy to nix it yet. As much as I'd like to avoid my child's name butchered, I feel like it's a simple name and people will get it the second time around.
  • My daughters middle name is Maeve and I love it. I grew up in Ireland and have an Irish name that gets mispronounced all the time. I used Maeve because I thought it was the easiest Irish name to pronounce. When she was born half of our friends pronounced it Mauve and half of them misread it as Maven. I still wouldn't change it though and secretly regret not using it for her first name.
  • Pronunciation issues or not, I'd use it if you love it and it's your number one choice. I love the name myself but DH isn't a fan. I think it is way more mainstream than it was just a few years ago, much like Isla, so I expect the pronunciation issues to not last forever.
  • It may just be my social circle, but this name seems to be increasing in popularity.  I have a feeling the issues w/pronunciation will become less common in a few years, as more kids have it.  Just a guess, though.

  • I know it's wrong but every time I see it I think mae-vee.

I think the name looks pretty in writing but I don't like the sound of the name much.

  • I think its really pretty    I can see a few people trying to pronounce it correctly but overall I can't imagine it would be a big deal
  • there are TWO Maeve's in my SD's class

granted it's in Brooklyn (where no one would EVER name their kid Brooklyn, btw) but still.

    I love it, it's awesome.

    This. Love it.

This is one of those names where I honestly can't understand how some people can't pronounce it. It is pronounce exactly how it looks. I swear some people try and make everything more complicated than it is. I just don't get it.

I love Maeve, and I totally agree with the above.  People who cannot pronounce this name just don't care that much to pronounce it correctly.

  • I've a Mae.va and i can tell you that, while i adore my name, it's an absolute nightmare for people to pronounce correctly. I've gotten quite used to correcting people regularly. All that aside, the default is that most people initially try to call me Maeve - and seem to have no trouble making that connection. I feel as if people naturally understand the pronunciation around Maeve... and, obviously, i think it's a beautiful name ;)

  • IMO it's not that out there. But I love Irish/Gaelic names, and I'm in a heavily Irish area of the country.
  • I pronounce it May.vee. Is that wrong? I really like it.
