Breakfast Ideas

Hi- I'm having a hard time coming up with a variety of breakfasts for my LO.  He refuses to eat eggs so we usually do some kind of grain (waffles, oatmeal, quinoa, french toast, pancakes, etc) with fruit.  I feel like I should offer him more protein at breakfasts; he loves peanut butter toast, but I don't want peanut butter to be his only breakfast protein (the quinoa is a great one, too, but I'd still like more variety).  Any creative ideas?  Thanks!

Re: Breakfast Ideas

  • How about yogurt? Just by itself or blended in a smoothie. Also there's nothing that says he has to eat "breakfast" food you could give ham, turkey, chicken, etc. As well as trying other butters like almond butter.

I agree with all of this. Also, if your LO is drinking milk, he probably doesn't need as much extra as you think. Using whole grains that it sounds like you've been doing is most likely enough for breakfast.

  • We do yogurt, cereal in milk (protein) with fruit, bagels with cream cheese, and the options you mention. Not creative but they get carbs and protein into her.
  • Last week I had some blueberrys and strawberries that were getting to the mushy point, so I cut them up and mixed them with the waffle batter and had strawberry/blueberry waffles. They were amazing. My son has never eaten breakfast so quickly. Have you tried mixing eggs with other things [bacon/sausage/turkey] or doing over hard eggs instead of scrambled so they look different? Or soft bagels with cream cheese. You can even just do cheese cubes if you're desperate for a souce of protein. My son has cheese as a snack almost daily! :)

Breakfast is probably my least creative meal of the day. I usually feed my daughter some dry cereal and fruit. Todddlers only need 1.5 ounces of protein a day so I wouldn't be too concerned about getting a ton in there at breakfast time.

  • I agree with previous poster about keep trying the egg, especially if he isn't allergic and is just avoiding them (it is probably a texture thing).

DS happens to love eggs especially if I give him egg in a hat. you take a piece of bread and cut a hole in the center about the size of a 50 cent piece, and put it in a skillet with some butter. Once the bread starts to toast you put a scrambled egg in the center. Once the egg solidifies on the bottom you flip the bread over and cook to your or LO's preference.

Let it cool for a minute or two and serve!

DS goes crazy and eats the whole thing, The best part is he is getting protein and carbs.

We also put cheerios in his yogurt. He seems to like that too!

  • DS doesn't like eggs either. We do french toast often aand he seems to like that. He also likes it if I dice up some ham and cook the eggs and ham together.

  • I often mash up half a banana and mix with plain yogurt or cottage cheese, cinnamon and vanilla extract. DS usually gobbles it right up.

  • My DS is not a fan of egg by itself but I do make him cream of wheat and put a scrambled egg and cheese in it and he loves it that way.

I make a fake french toast by just dipping the bread in an egg/milk mixture, so no extra sugar.  It's a fantastic idea.

Other non-egg things we do for breakfast:

    Yogurt

Oatmeal (if you make this stovetop, you can stir eggs into it before cooking for some extra protein)

    Smoothies

    Crepes/pancakes
