Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

First vacation with our son

My husband and I will be flying Jet Blue to Orlando with a lap infant (14 mo old). It's about a 3 hr direct flight. Any tips for flying? Also plan on checking our graco stroller and our car seat at the gate.

Staying outside of Disney. Planning on seeing family, then going to Sea World 1 day and Magic Kingdom another day and doing a character breakfast.

Any tips or suggestions for this trip with a toddler? I've never traveled with a child before

Also I am so sick of people saying "I hate being on planes with kids, you have balls traveling with a toddler and  what's the point? he won't remember" UGH!

  • Will he watch movies? I'd bring an iPad/lap top for entertainment. Also maybe try and time it so he will be tired? Like push him so some of the flight is nap time?

    Good luck!

  • Lots of books and a couple new ones helped us during our lap flight...we took another one and hot him his own seat and he slept the whole way. He was excited when the FA came with a snack and drinks too. We also had a quiet book and his favorite toys.

At Disney he slept in his stroller and so during that time one day we did our souvenir shopping. He loved it! Have fun!

  • We took LO on an international flight (12 hours) when she was 12 months.  Overall she did really well.  I agree with pps to bring a new toy/book.  We brought  a couple that were still in the packaging, that LO could take the time to unwrap herself.  The other thing that worked really well, were plain ol' office stickers - those round colorful ones. we let her put them in her coloring book, on the seats, on us....we made them into "earrings" and she loved sharing them with the other kids around us.  They aren't very sticky, so they were easily cleaned up before we got off the plane.  Lastly, we loaded up an old iphone with some baby apps and stuck it in this protective case.  It worked well while we were on vacation too.  It's not something that she would normally get to play with, but worth it for the trip.  Oh, and be sure to give LO something to suck on during take-off/landing.

  • Just took a trip (4 hour direct flight, both directions) with our 18 month old. Thankfully, we got very lucky on the way back and had the whole row to ourselves. DS did best in his own seat, even though he did not have his own ticket. For the flight there, he was on my lap. I sat by the window and that distracted him for a while. Both the moving clouds/scenery and the window shade.

I took so many things with us. He played with 2 toys. He slept for part of it, which was nice, and ate a TON of snacks. (Pack extra, even if you think you have enough.) The flight attendants were also very nice and brought extra water/juice and food for us to give him. He ripped apart Sky Mall. That was the best 20 minutes ever. Clean up, not so much. Of the toys I took, he loved the Kindle (with games and movies) and DH's hand-held games. Anything technological, he wants it. (Depends on your child, I guess.)

Just stay calm and know that everyone is there to help. We sat near the rear of the plane, so the flight attendants near us could help and the bathroom wasn't too far. (People are less likely to turn around and stare if your child screams too.)
