Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Problems with Orajel? scary moment

We have been giving DS baby orajel for the past week when he seems really uncomfortable with teething...Today he was really fussy and seemed in pain and after trying all the non-medication routes I gave him some as I was trying to get him down for a nap. He seemed fine and settled down and started to drift off to sleep in my arms..as I lay him in his crib suddenly he gasped and started to try to cry but barely any sound came out...he was almost gasping for breath...I got scared and grabbed him and held him upright and pounded on his back..he took a breath and then went into hysterics like Ive never heard before.....It was really scary and Im not sure if it is linked to the orajel as I've heard some stories of babies with breathing problems after using..anyone else heard of this?

  • I've heard of this, not sure where though.

Thank God your LO is alright, good job mama!

  • The Canadian Dental Association (not sure about the pediatric society) recommends against Oragel for teething because it can potentially numb the babies throat area, thus the potential for choking.

I'm glad your LO is alright!

  • My Pediatrician recommended not giving LO Oragel, as it can numb the throat/tongue making it difficult to swallow. Not sure about breathing problems after use.

This!!! Its mainly for older babies/toddlers when they are teething. My Pedi said not to use it until after 1 year. Try giving a cold wash cloth or a cold teething ring.

  • i dont think it would be the orajel but its possible he swallowed/choked on his saliva, my lo does that often, shes teething right now and sometimes has so much extra saliva in her mouth that it goes down the wrong way and makes her gasp

this. pedi just okay'd a "little bit" for my 21 month old
  • ive never given my little one orajel so not sure if that could be it...says not to give it two them if their under 5 months i believe or consult with your doctor first

  • It is also linked to cardiac problems according to our pedi, who does not recommend it.
  • I had not heard of this, but thanks for sharing - now I know!!! I'm glad your LO is alright! Smile
  • Thank you for sharing..I did not know this!  Glad your LO is ok!  That would be scary

  • Our pedi did recommend it if it was needed(in moderation of course)...We have tried teething rings/toys, Hylands, Sophie, cold washcloths, and just about anything else you can think of.....I actually tried not to give tylenol  but now I will be throwing away the oprajel and giving tylenol as a last resort!

  • I've heard of this too. I think (if I remember correctly) that it can make their tongues slightly numb, which can cause breathing problems if their tongue relaxes too much. Scary stuff!

    So glad everything's okay!

  • I actually think it may have been a combination of so much saliva from teething plus possibly a little numbing of the throat which may have made swallowing a little more difficult....I also think he got really scared....I have never heard him cry the way he did...poor baby :(

    orajel is in the garbage!!
