Sick kids and work missed?

On average the first year of daycare how many days did you have to call out sick? I'm worried as I have twins so it will be double. Thanks!

Re: Sick kids and work missed?

  • I missed 2.5 days with DS1. I have missed 1 day so far for DS2 in the 2.5 months he has been in daycare.

  • The first year, maybe 4 or 5 days.  The second year has been worse - maybe 6 or 7 days.  The hard part for us has been doctor appointments - DS has some issues swallowing and coughing and saw a LOT of doctors the first year.

With DD1 the first yr, I missed 4-5 days and left early on several days. With DD2, I missed 0 days.

  • We started our kids at the same time, when ds was an older infant and dd was 2 1/2.  We averaged one day a week out of daycare between the two of them (some weeks no days, but then since they have to be fever-free for 24 hours, once they get sick its almost always two days unless you lap into a weekend, and usually when the kids shared they didn't get sick at the same time so there were different days missed for each of them).

We split that between me working from home, dh working from home, dh using family sick days, Two grandmas helping, and the occasional emergency babysitter.  it was still brutal.

It came as a complete shock to me b/c I would have told you that my kids don't get sick a lot, or at least that DD didn't.  What I've since learned is that she fights off infection quickly - she'll have a fever for a day or two and act slightly under the weather, but then completely bounce back.  When she was at home that didn't really register to me as "sick" and I probably wouldn't even have thought to take her temp.  We almost never have to go to the doctor.  But each of those hardly-any-symptoms things is 2 or 3 days out of school.

  • Too many to count :(  We just got a nanny for this reason.  Not only did the kids get sick, we did, too.  And when I say sick, I don't mean "suck-it-up and go to work anyway" sick.  I mean deathbed sick.  With 2 of them there now, I only expected it to get worse.  Today is their last day at daycare.

  • Like a PP said, I got sick way more than my son did-- terrible can't-get-out-of-bed sick. Outside of a little cold, he was sick maybe 3 or 4 days and bounced back fast. My neighbor, on the other hand, has twins that are a few months younger than my son and they are CONSTANTLY sick. She's used up all of her PTO and her husband has gone through the majority of his as well. They seem to constantly pass things back and forth to one another.

  • I think I missed 3-4 days...DH and I swapped times though. (We had strep throat, HFM, and a few ear infections that year).

First year - maybe 1-2 days

Now that he is in preschool - probably worked from home 7+ times when he was sick.  When there is no school but I have work a family member watches him or we use Bright Horizons

  • Between the flu, ear infections, RSV, pink eye and some really bad colds I think she was home 10-15 days.  DH and I switched off though.  Daycare would have taken her back immediately after she was diagnosed with RSV (?!), but we wanted her home because she didn't do well with her breathing treatments and the possibility of her breathing getting worse terrified us.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I think I only have missed about 2 days per year when DD is sick?  DH and I usually manage to alternate days so one of us doesn't take the full brunt of time off.  Some kids get sick a lot and some don't.  It's a little hard to predict which group a baby will fall into.

  • DD is about a week older than your twins.  I have spent seven vacation days on her this year.  I am hoping next year is better.  I want some of my vacation to be vacation!!

  • Yikes, I don't want to scare you but I've missed a lot of days since my son has been in daycare.  He started daycare in June 2012 and so he's been there for a year now.  Just in 2013, I've missed a few days, I'm not exactly sure how many but I think at least 5.  At the beginning of the year I missed 3 days in a row because he was sick.  I also work part-time...  It's rough!

We were out between stomach bugs, flu, pneumonia 2 full weeks in the first year.  It was a really difficult 1st winter.

  • I personally only missed 23 days during DS's first year. Total days he could not go to DC due to illness was probably 5 per month. DH took a lot of time off and my mom helped, too.

DD just started DC last month, and this week was out 4 days for diarrhea. Painful.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • Oh my God, like 20. He had every stomach bug, RSV, croup, etc. Luckily work has been really flexible. DH started a new job right before we had DS, so that is why I took all of the sick days, all of the PTO for dr appt's, etc.

But, if the twins are always together it won't be double. Maybe an extra day or two but they'll be around the same bugs. If they do get sick, it'll probably be the same thing at the same time.
