Okay obviously I have never had a BOY newborn! The dr. told me when he was circumsized that we needed to gently pull back the skin on his pen!s and clean it. We haven't done that yet because he was recovering from the circ, but now he is looking good so I'm wondering...
How often am I supposed to do this? Also, I guess I just gently pull back a tiny bit of skin?! I feel like such a moron - sorry!
Re: another question - changing boy diapers
I did it with at least every other diaper change at first. We also put a big glob of A&D on him as well. We did that for at least 6 months, then tapered off to maybe 1-2xs a day. Our pedi warned us that she'd seen skin reattach as late as 1 yr old, so to keep up with the routine as much as possible.
eta- yes, just gently pull back the skin, clean & put the ointment on.
I think right now it'd be at every diaper change? And you'd pull back all the skin until you can see the full head of the penis and the full rim under it.
I didn't pull back with G cause no one told me to and he got the adhesions. I was diligent with pulling B's back but he still got adhesions, just not as bad. With both of them, though, the pedi said to pull back once in a while (now) to clean it.
Yep. No one told us to pull the skin back and Jack immediately had adhesions. I would do it every diaper change and put Vaseline or diaper cream on it to make sure it wasn't sticking in between changes.
Seriously! Not that I know what I'm having yet, but I'm freaking out.
So... ummm... this is not an issue if you don't circ, right? Again, not that we've made a decision one way or another, but sheesh, this sounds like a lot of work. Also, with all the cream/Vasoline/whatever... what do you do if you CD??

Neither of my boys are circ'd and we haven't done anything. Super easy! No creams or pulling anything back, etc. Just wipe/clean it like any other body part.
I think at our 2 year pedi appointment the Dr. just tried to pull it back a bit, but nothing really retracted. He said that you can naturally start to retract/pull back the foreskin and teach them how to clean, etc once they are closer to 4 or 5 years old.
We have a boy and they're scaring me, too! We did not circumcise. That does mean DS will have to be good with his hygiene as he gets older but there's none of this "pull back the skin on a tiny penis" stuff required.
There was a thread on parenting a couple weeks ago about uncirc'd older toddler/ preschool aged. That whole skin pulling and teaching your older kid to wash sounded even worse than this baby business. So I was all like ok I'll just circ and then I won't have to worry about any skin pulling. But nooooo, you just can't win!
our boys are circumcised. personally, i think i would have skipped it (mostly because it freaks me out). but i left that decision to my husband. he researched and made the decision. we have had no difficulties. we just gently stretch the penis out at each diaper change to clean. if you dont do that, they get cream, or sweat or whatever gunked up in there.
as for the cloth diapers, i know of two options.
1) place a small cloth liner in the diaper
2) use coconut oil instead of vaseline. this is what we did. it is cloth diaper save and works just like vaseline or any other cloth diaper safe cream. we use it for so many things.
It could be that since he's still freshly circumcised that there isn't anything to pull back yet. I would just focus on keeping it clean & moistened with A&D or Vaseline.
It's the skin right around the rim that you want to pay close attention to. Just gently pulling back on the looser skin, away from the rim, should be enough maintenance.
I was really nervous about being a FTM of a boy & having to care for the circumcision, too. My sister helped me at first & then it became routine. Then I felt the same nerves when I found out I was having a girl with my 2nd pregnancy! It's all about what you're familiar with.
Man oh man, I am starting to really hope this baby is a girl.
Thanks, ladies, for the answers on circumcision. I swear I would never have asked on my Dec 13 board b/c it would become a whoooooole thing. I love that we can discuss things rationally like adults here.
Oh, and thanks for the coconut oil tip, jnicolen! That stuff works for everything!
This. I don't remember ever pulling anything back and we never had any issues.
I was also instructed the just glob with Vaseline and go on. I was not told to pull back on anything. This thread has freaked me out! I'll have to have DS checked at his 6 month appointment.
I was also wondering if it matter how they were circumcised. DS didn't have the ring thing put on him he had the other version done.
This was actually perfect and totally makes sense! Thanks!!
