High-Risk Pregnancy

low amniotic fluid levels

Good afternoon!  Yesterday I had my 2nd weekly BPP/ultrasound and baby was moving, heart rate looked good, etc.  When I saw my OB to review the results she indicated my fluid levels were a 6.3, which were low enough that she sent me to labor & delivery for prolonged monitoring of baby's heartbeat and my blood pressure.  My BP was fine, no protein in my urine and baby did really well on the monitoring.  I go back in two days for a repeat ultrasound.

Has anyone had experience with this and is there anything I can do to boost the levels of fluid?  I'm nervous about potential cord compressions, etc, which my OB said could occur with low fluid.  Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: low amniotic fluid levels

  • I am dealing with the same thing right now. I was at 10mm when we left San Diego to move to Puerto Vallarta, but it is close to 100 degrees here with the heat index. At my first OB appointment in Mexico, my fluid had dropped 6 mm. Three days later, after drinking tons of water, it was back up to 10 mm. Three days after that, it was back down to 7 mim. I have to have biophysical profiles every week to check my fluid levels, but an official diagnosis of oligo does not occur until 5 mm. Just take it one day at a time, drink as much water as you can, and rest in the air conditioning if you are someplace hot. Low fluid is much more common in the summertime, but is also very difficult to get an accurate picture of. The measurements can vary quite a bit from all the research I have read.

Thank you for the info and link!  :)
  • I did, I was down to 2 cm at one point. I was 20 weeks and they really told me that nothing would help and that it was likely a chromosomal abnormailty, I wouldn't accept the 'there's nothing you can do' idea, and put myself on bed rest and drank gallons of water each day, by three weeks later, we were at a 10! My advice? Drink up!!! (my IUGR baby was born 6 weeks ago and she is pure perfection. tiny, but perfect!)

  • I had low fluid (bounced between a 4-9 for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy with LO#2). The best advice I can give you is to try to stay off your feet if you can and drink. Drink, drink, drink and just when you think you can't drink anymore, keep going. I was aiming for at least 100oz of water a day and usually put another 20-30oz on top of that, in addition to other fluids. I was told to try the low calorie Gatorades as well but I couldn't tolerate the taste.

I ended up on modified bed rest because of it - as soon as they took me off, my fluid levels dropped back down. My water ended up leaking at 38w5d and I delivered vaginally the next day.

  • I drank tons of water and was on bed rest. I got mine up from 6 to 11.

Thank you everyone for the responses - encouraging to hear that everyone had a happy ending!  I'm definitely increasing my fluid intake, but unfortunately cannot do much about the resting thing.  I'm working six days/week so that I can bank time for a short maternity leave.  I do get to sit down for most of my work days, though.  Have a follow up u/s tomorrow morning, so hoping to see an increase in fluid.  Thanks again!
