Elevated liver enzyme in toddler? Why?

Hi Ladies,

Our LO was very sick over the winter with many episodes of being sick (viral) most of the time. Bacterail once with a course to two of antibiotics. At the time, he had a great deal of bloodwork to see what was going on and to make sure nothing was a miss. We even saw a rheumatologist. They found that he has one elevated liver enzyme test. We have been having him followed by the pedi of course to make sure the number is closely monitored. And it has showed improvement. So it started at 50, then went to 49, and now it's at 45, which is still 5 points above normal. Although, it is slightly improving, I am still anxious in wanting to know, Why?

His pediatrician is going to call us this evening to discuss further as it was the nurse that called this morning.

I wanted to reach out to see if any of you all have experienced this with your LO's?

Re: Elevated liver enzyme in toddler? Why?

  • I haven't experienced this with my LO, but I am a resident physician. With an isolated lab abnormality like this, and especially with it being so mildly elevated, I wouldn't be too concerned.

However, I did do a quick search and saw that it can be an early sign of a muscular disorder like muscular dystrophy. Just something to keep in the back of your mind and bring up to your physician. Good luck.
