Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How many oz of liquid?

I am almost done weaning my son and was wondering how much liquid he should be getting throughout the day in the form of milk and water. What do you do for your child?

Re: How many oz of liquid?

  • My pedi said 30 total (with no more than 16 being milk) but DD is closer to 24 and still seems energetic with wet diapers.  She won't drink milk, so the liquid is mostly water and VERY watered down juice.

  • I believe the recommendaiton is 16 - 20 ounces; BUT it also largely depends on the water content of the fruits/vegetables that your LO is consuming.  We have a huge problem with DS not ever wanting to drink anything, he would take about 6 ounces of formula a day plus maybe 4 ounces of water.  He won't drink milk, watered-down juice or anything else.  We were very concerned.  But our pediatrician assured us that he was fine and was probably getting his water content from all the fruits/vegetables that he eats (and he eats a TON of that).  Our pediatrician said the key is to make sure he has enough wet diapers (4 to 5 in a 24 hour period).
  • DS drinks between 12-18oz of milk a day (which he has at breakfast, lunch and dinner). I have no idea how much water he drinks in a day...some days I don't have to refill the sippy cup at all and other days he's chugged the whole thing before nap time. He usually has like 4oz of a green smoothie at some point during the day as well, but I don't really think that counts as a liquid like you're describing.

  • My kid has never been much of a drinker. He takes about 15 oz of milk a day and a couple oz of water. I try to push fluids all day long and he won't take more. He was like that when he took bottles, too. He only averaged about 20 oz a day then, too. He has at least six wet diapers a day so I'm not worried about it.

  • My kid downs like 6 sippy cups a day, which equates to 40 some oz.

She's some sort of sippy cup addict I swear.

She always has been. She took a lot of bottle from day 1 too. I mean at a year old she was still having five bottles a day.

It's 2 of milk and the rest water with a bit of juice box every other week or so. Give or take on the milk. Somedays it's more, somedays it's less. I let her decide that within reason.

Whatever. She eats good. Is otherwise healthy. Pedi told me it was NBD.

  • My son gets about 14 oz of milk (he eats a lot of other dairy - we try to limit it because he has low iron) and I don't measure the water, he drinks it on demand all day. I'm not terribly concerned because he pees often and it's nice and clear - very pale yellow.

  • DS drinks ~20 ounces of toddler formula each day, plus 6 oz of juice and maybe 4-6 oz of water.

  • Our pede said 16-24oz. of milk. I have a thin guy, so that may be why he suggested the higher range. I pretty much offer 2-4 ounces four times a day (we are still weaning, so he gets milk from one nursing session as well). As for water I generally fill up a nine-ounce sippy once a day and leave it where he can reach it whenever he wants. Sometimes he hardly drinks any and other times I need to add a few more ounces.
