DD's pedi might be crazy

I posted yesterday about DD having a really bad cold and blah blah blah whatever else I said. Her daycare called me today because she had a fever again, so I called and told her pedi that I needed an appt ASAP.

DD hasn't been eating much at all (17.5 oz yesterday and 5 oz today at the time) and has only had 1 wet diaper today. Her poopy diapers were so dark green they were almost black, and there's a dent in the back of her head. Everything I've read online says all of those are signs of dehydration, so I mentioned them to the pedi. He said those meant nothing and the only way to tell if she's really dehydrated is if her mouth is dry or not.

Has anyone else heard of that? I'm already considering finding a new pedi since I left a message yesterday and he never called me back, but now I feel like he might be a bit crazy. Am I just being a crazy worry-wart?

Re: DD's pedi might be crazy

  • No matter whether the pedi's advice is crazy or not, if you don't trust your doctor, you should find a new one.

That said, I would insist on being seen. Even if it is a wasted appointment, you will know for sure that your LO is okay. And, if there is something wrong, you'll have caught it.

I did take her. That's when he told me that those weren't signs of dehydration.

  • Well, at least the pedi did see you--some will just try to put you off over the phone.

I thought everyone agreed that a lack of wet diapers was, indeed, a sign of dehydration. Does DD still have poopy diapers? Could there be pee in those, too?

Do you have an advice nurse you call for more guidance? My insurance has a 24-hour line, so yours might, too.

After not getting a call back yesterday, I told them I was coming right away, no matter what.

That's what I thought, too. Apparently everyone is wrong? She's had lots of little poopy diapers, but definitely no pee in them.

I don't know if my insurance has an adivce nurse, but it's worth finding out. Thanks!

  • Good luck. And, it might be time to look for another doctor, one you trust and respect.

  • I might take LO to urgent care. The one wet diaper and dent in her head makes me a little concerned for dehydration as well. Listen to your gut.

This.  And I'm not one to suggest running to urgent care for routine things.  I'd go for this if my pedi was acting like yours.  GL!

  • lack of wet diapers does in fact mean dehydration. Where in the hell did he go to med school?! I would definitely find a new doctor.
  • Def. signs of dehydration. Get that baby to an UTC or the ER and change pedis for sure (I'm thinking of doing the same because I really second-guess mine).
