Anyone else? DS only really says two nonsense words "dee" and "mum." Its starting to bug me a little. He definitely understands some things and has started to point to some pictures in books if you ask him to (ie "where are the kitties?") But no words yet. I've tried to insist he try to say some things but he gets frustrated quickly and it turns into a tantrum.

Have you tried baby sign yet? I swear I get all crazy giddy when he repeats a sign to me, he's done things like more, milk, ball, bird and frog. Yesterday we were playing with a frog finger puppet and I kept signing frog and he signed it back to me, I was over the moon. He obviously cannot say frog yet so it's a way to bridge the gap. As for ne ne from michyme's poste, he says that when he sees the cat and na na for the dog...so he has his own language too
I haven't and the reason why was I read some research that some kids will use the signs instead of early speech. I do regret it now. Maybe I'll start trying that over the summer when I''m off. Thanks!

Ds had been saying a few words but a few weeks ago stopped and everything becAme "dees" with a finger pointing to whatever it is. Slowly he is starting to pick up on "please" and "thank you" and started up with Mama again, but has stopped saying "ball" and "doggy" and sayig our dog's name. I'm not concerned because he seems to pay attention when we say new word to him and will move his mouth like he is going to try to say it but can't figure out how, if that makes any sense.
We have no words yet either. The best we got was for one week when he would copy a sneeze. I'd say ahhhh choooo. And he'd go chhhh. He doesn't do that anymore and doesn't even say mama or dada with meaning. I'm not worried, but I am looking forward to hearing words from the little guy. We've used a few signs for several months. Sometimes I think he does "more" and sometimes "all done" but I can't tell for sure.
Try baby signs, it is AWESOME. And don't feel like it is too late, they can learn anything at any time.
I have read also that it may delay early speech, but when speech does become common place they're vocab will be much larger. We always say the word with the sign and as the months go by LO does the same, saying things that sound like "more" and "all done" but if she wasn't also signing, I probably wouldn't think it was actual words. Also I have hear that the 'terrible twos' don't exist in the deaf community since they'll start signing with infants which may indicate the fact that some of issues hearing kiddos have is just a frustration at being unable to communicate.
My LO only says a few words and they are his own version of real words if that makes sense. I wouldn't be too worried at this time.
I used baby signs with my DD and it didn't delay her speech at all. You say the word as your baby or you signs it. They learn very quickly to use both together, and eventually use the word.
Ava talks alot. when I was talking to one of the girls at work she was saying that she heard somewhere that girls tend to talk more earlier. I never shut up though either lol I think she takes after mom . but shes got about 15 words in vocab right now
