Working Moms

Pregnant Job Search

I'm a Ft working mom who is expecting baby 2 in December. I've recently made up mind to start looking for a new position outside of my current company. So my question is, when during the interview process do I share the news? I'm practically already showing so it won't be too much longer until its very obvious.
And, I also have pretty extensive ob care since my DS was born at 31 wks. I have weekly appointments and possibly could be on bed rest at some point. Do I just take that as it comes after I'm hired? Or would you be up front about that too?
TIA

Re: Pregnant Job Search

  • Considering your medical history, why are you looking to change jobs now?  Is it really critical that you find something now (like impending layoffs)?  If its just general job unhappiness/ time for a change, I personally would stick it out until after ML.  I was unhappy in my job for a long time but waited until after my 2nd ML and then searched for a new job, and started when DS was 8months old.

Anyways, in answer to your original question, I would not say anything about pregnancy until you have an offer in hand.  Then you can bring it up and negotiate some maternity leave as part of the offer.

  • Don't say anything until you get a job. I am looking for a new position too. I need more money or I can't afford child care for two kids, but I'm 34 weeks. If I could hide my pregnancy I would.

You do not mention at the interview.  Despite the elephant in the room, they should not mention it.  If you are offered a position, you then discuss before you accept.
  • I'd really look into their ML requirements at a new position. I had great benefits with my company and we got in a girl who was already pregnant and she didn't qualify for any of them because she hadn't been with the company for a year. FMLA requires a year to be covered as well. My ML is 12 weeks at full pay. Disability is only 60 so definitely make sure any new company will even offer you ML.
  • I job searched during my second pregnancy until I was 21 weeks along. You could still not tell I was pregnant so I didn't disclose during interviews. I was never offered a job but I can tell you that I would have told them when they offered the job to me. I would not disclose during the interview process.

  • I was recently in a very similar position.

I'm PG with 2 due in Nov and my DS was also born at 31 weeks. I interviewed for a job shortly after I found out and right before they asked me for references I told them I was PG. They didn't care and still wanted to hire me. Once I received the offer I told them I was high risk and will have a lot of doctor appointments, sometimes weekly. They were fine with this too. I have been working here for almost two months now and so far so good.
GL with your decision but IMO its best to be upfront and honest in this situation or stay at your current job.
  • Thanks everyone! I really want to get out of my current job because recently the owners' daughter came to work at our company and she is just terrible. I've tried to talk to both my manger and the owners about the situation but nothing has changed. It's time for me to move on.
I appreciate all of your comments. Thanks again!
