Natural Birth

I did it : natural baby!

Luca Alan was born on June 7, 2013, weighing in at 8lbs 2 oz. I was in labor for 32 hours and pushed for an hour and half. Being a FTM my birth plan was always to have a natural birth, up until the day before I had been working out 5 days a week. My dr always said half the race was training for it and I def believe that working out with LO def helped with how I handled my pain. The last 8 hours of labor were prob the toughest. My contractions lasted about a minute and luckily were spaced 23 apart so I could catch my breath. My water never broke so at 9 centimeters my dr popped it. An hour later my cervix hadn't changed it was still 80 thinned out so my dr suggested sticking her hand in my box when I was peaking with a contraction to help thin it out. Yes I felt every little thing and I can't lie it hurt like hell. A couple of minutes later I was ready to push, while the dr numbed the area the amount of pressure you feel down there is unexplainable after pushing for so long LO was born and in return I have second degree tear. I do believe our bodies were trained to do this, however nothing can ever prepare you for what your in store for. If I can do it you mommies can too. I believe with the right support system and mind frame we can achieve anything. Good luck mommies and keep the faith!

Wow the doctor numbed the area for pushing? I've never heard of that before. Was it with an injection of Lidocaine or something? Where are you from?

I feel you on the whole doctor putting their hand up thing. When I was 9cm I started feeling the urge to push and my midwife stuck her hand up and held back my cervical lip so the baby's head could make it through. I want to avoid that next time at all costs!

Congrats on the new little one!

  • Yes it was a lidocaine injection and I felt when they were doing that too LOL. I live in Knoxville, TN. And thank you, did you end up tearing or anything?
  • Congrats!  I completely agree with your statement "nothing can ever prepare you for what your in store for."  I know I prepared, read, worked out, and had a great coach but labor was still unlike anything I have every experienced.

Congrats!  That's awesome that you made it through such a long labor without meds.  I worked out while pregnant with my DS2.  It does help a ton I think!  Maybe not so much with the pain management, but just with knowing your body and knowing how to work with it instead of against!

FWIW my Dr. offered to give me a numbing shot for pushing too.  I declined, but I'm pretty sure it was lidocane.  I'm in Nebraska.

Yep. Tore from my cervix to my anal sphincter. It was technically only a second degree tear but it was pretty bad. It took about an hour and a half to repair. I couldn't sit down without pain for like ten weeks and couldn't squat for more than 20 seconds without pain until like a month ago. It's one of the reasons I want to wait and let my body do things on its own next time with no hands up there! I don't know if it had anything to do with it but I would do pretty much anything to not tear again.

  • I wonder if that had anything to do with why I tore too!!! I hope you feel better soon. I'm in pain but nowhere near what I felt last week. It's so nice to hear other people's encouraging stories on here. We can do it, just know its def as challenging as they say it is.
  • Well done!! It's not easy doing it natural for your first birth since it tends to be longer and is all so new. Kudos to you for figuring out what you wanted and working for it, and having the right frame of mind to take each stage as it came. I hope you heal quickly and that breastfeeding gets off to a great start.  Congratulations!! Post a pic!! :)
