Am I Taking the Test Too Early?

Hello Everyone,

I am not a mother yet, so I have a ton of questions. Let me explain my situation to you. For the most part of my teenage and adult life, I've had irregular periods (sometimes they would come regular but then fall irregular again). For the past few months it's been pretty regular meaning that they at least came in the same week of every month. But this month, it's been different. I was expecting it to come around the first or second week of June but it didn't show up. I did get the usual PMS sensitive breasts, but no cramps. I always have cramps before getting my period. So, I waited a week more to see if my period would show up. Still, no period and no cramps. Throughout that week, I've been feeling tired and a little queasy. When I have food in front of me, it's hard for me to put the food in my mouth because I feel sick. I don't feel sick enough to vomit though. It's been a whole week of this. I don't get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. I've been sleeping fine. And frequent urination is not really out of the norm for me because I drink a lot of water throughout the day. So, anyways, today, I took a pregnancy test and it told me that I was not pregnant. Is there any other reason for these things happen and still no period? Or did I take the test too early? When should I take the pregnancy test if I'm usually for the most part irregular? I was going to wait til the end of the month, but I decided to take one today just to see if it would tell me something. Please help!

 Sincerely,

DH <3

Re: Am I Taking the Test Too Early?

  • I'm so new to asking pregnancy questions that I needed to google what a "BFP" was. Hahaha. Thank you for your response and will be taking your advice.

If there's anyone else that has some advice, I will be willing to take it!

    Thank you!

  • Oh, I had one question, why 60 days? I was going to wait til the end of this month to check, but my husband wanted me to take it either today or tomorrow. He says it's because he wanted to know for Father's Day. Lol.
  • Thank you again for helping me with these words of advice. I really appreciate it!
  • I'd suggest picking up a copy of Taking Control of Your Fertility. I was amazed at the stuff I learned about my body.  I bought mine on half.com for like $4.  GL
  • Hello again,

So I was wondering now that I've had these symptoms, last night I just started having light cramps. Also today, there have been mild cramps also. It got a little strong at times, but it was probably because I was hungry. So, because I've had those symptoms that I mentioned before, a little nausea, breasts felt painful but like when I'm about to get my AF, etc. Now, that I have cramps, could that be because of implantation? And if I do start spotting when should I take another test after that? Or is it possible for me to have cramps and not bleed at all? Sorry for all the random questions!

you would get the pregnancy symptoms after implantation not prior. I would not chalk up your current symptoms to implantation.

i hate to be a negative nelly but want to be a realist but you're likely not pregnant. If you were symptomatic for so long and didn't get a bfp that means those particular symptoms were unrelated to pregnancy since if you're pregnant enough for symptoms you'd be pregnant enough for a pregnancy test to turn positive. I know we all know of thy mythical person who got false negatives and found out at three months but that is incredibly rare.

  • Considering you've always had irregular periods, wouldn't it stand to reason that you don't really know when your period should start?  And regarding the symptoms - not that you aren't actually experiencing them - but I think when you're hoping for pregnancy (or even hoping to avoid it) you allow your mind to be way more sensitive to feelings/sensations in your body.

I would follow PPs advice, test weekly until you get a positive test or your period.  See your doctor if you get neither in 60 days.

    Best of luck!

  • Thanks for your feedback. Well, of course I get a little anxious and worried when this is my first time experiencing these things and especially because I haven't ever been pregnant. Hence, I'm asking a lot of random, newbie questions. And, as for my periods being irregular, I said it my earlier post that they've been regular for the past few months. There was a time last year that I didn't even have my period for a whole month (and there was no question if I was pregnant or not back then for a reason that was obvious to me). But I started getting PMS symptoms around the time that I was supposed to get my period but didn't. Yesterday, I had cramps, but I haven't had one this morning. Just waiting for my AF to come if these symptoms I'm having are not pregnancy ones.
  • If you are far enough along to experience symptoms, you are far enough along to take a basic drugstore urine test and get accurate results.

Honestly?  Sore breasts, nausea, exhaustion, etc are all signs of early pregnancy.  You might also notice that your scent has changed, if you pay close attention to your body.
