BWing in a wheelchair

So I would really like my mom to be able to hold my younger DD and someone asked me why I didn't think of putting her in a carrier for her.

My mom has MS and has been in a wheelchair for the last 12 years of my life. For her to be able to hold her youngest and possibly last grandchild would mean the world to her, but due to limited mobility in her arms she has not been able to without assistance.

That said any recommendations on a wrap, sling, SSC that may work for this.

I currently have a Moby and Beco Butterfly 2, but have been in the market to get a back up carrier as well that suits Stella's 20lb weight well.

Links so I can comparison shop would be appreciated!!

Thanks in advance ladies!!

Re: BWing in a wheelchair

  • A soft ring sling might work really well, because that would be easy for you to slip over your mom's shoulder, and once you put Stella in it, you can easily adjust it for her from the front.

How old is your DD? My only concern would be that she might be afraid of being attached to someone who is not mommy or daddy. DS would not be happy being worn by anyone else, but that's my little boy, and maybe your DD knows and trusts her grandma a lot! :D

I know it's not popular here, but it may fit this situation. A baby bjorn. If not pulled tight, would allow LO to face forward therefore sitting in grandma's lap, only she's restrained safely. If it's not tight, and LO is actually sitting, you will not have the issue with the hips for the baby, as she's not dangling, just sitting.

  • Really I think any carrier could work - I would start with what you have and see if she and baby are comfortable and then go from there.  The mama I've seen in person BWing in a wheelchair used a buckle carrier mostly.  I have info on other carriers in my siggy link if you are interested in other things.
  • I've seen a mum using a moby type wrap in a wheelchair, legs were not a problem. As other people have said though it may be hard to get her into it, I'd try her with your Beco as you already have it but I think a ring sling would be easiest.
