Bedtime help

My lo is 25 months and can't go to sleep on his own. I nursed him to sleep until he was 15 months, and after we stopped nursing I always rocked/held him until he fell asleep. He used to fall asleep fairly quickly, but now it can take as long as 1.5 hrs. I've tried adjusting his bedtime to see if that would work and it did for about a week and then we went right back to where were started. I'm not strong enough to just put him in his crib and walk away- he cries and gets worked up. If I stay in the room he stands up crying and reaching for me. I need help, what can I do to help my lo fall asleep on his own?

Re: Bedtime help

  • Read a few sleep solution books...see if one fits you. I had luck with Ferber's progressive waiting.

  • You could try transitioning to a twin or toddler bed. We coselpt with DD until she was about 25-26 months. We got her a twin bed and let her pick out the quilt and stuff for it. Then the first couple nights we slept with her, then moved to a cot next to her bed. We moved the cot further away every couple days. It works pretty well. I should say she is back in our bed but that because I can't sleep with DH at this stage of pregnancy so he is in her bed and DD is with me, lol.

  • I've thought about trying a toddler bed but I'm not sure if he is ready. I'm sure it would be easier for him if I was able to sit right next to him while he is falling asleep. We are starting to potty train next week so I don't think I should try the bed just yet. I don't want too many new things at once.
  • This is my DS1's story exactly.  We moved to a twin bed, Did the Sleep Lady Shuffle method, and introduced a toddler clock.  Suddenly he is STTN for the first ever!  I would definitely look into Sleep Lady Shuffle.  It involves moving yourself away a few feet at a time over a period of weeks until you can just put them in bed.

  • My ds sleeps through the night most nights, but there are still nights he wakes up. He used to get up nearly every night and sometimes more than once a night. Ill check into the Sleep Lady Shuffle. Thanks
  • I like the Happiest Baby Guide to Great Sleep.  It is comprehensive and includes gentle as well as less gentle methods.  There are sections for infants and for toddlers.  Good luck.
