Pregnant after 35

For those who had an Amnio

Ok- have lots of questions. I'm scheduled for an amnio in 2 weeks.

How uncomfortable was the procedure? Were you uncomfortable after? Did you remain on bedrest for 48 hrs after procedure? Did you get to see LO in the ultrasound? Thanks

Re: For those who had an Amnio

  • Most ladies say it's no big deal, but mine was very uncomfortable.  Inserting the needle is nothing, but the cramping from drawing up the fluid was bad for me.  The good news is it only lasts for about a minute!  I didn't have any pain afterward at all, but I did rest for 48 hours.  We had a long u/s beforehand, so we did get to see our little guy.  I didn't see him during the actual procedure because I covered my eyes, so I wouldn't see the needle. You will be fine!

  • My ultrasound was last week, and I just got the results today!

I was a nervous wreck before the procedure. I did not need to be. It took about a minute (or less) to draw out the fluid, and the only thing I felt was the tiny prick as the needle went through the skin - nothing else, notgoing thru the gut or muscles or flab or even the uterus. Just one tiny puncture. At the end of it, they did not even put a bandaid on the spot, and the little mark left by the needle was smaller than the mark left when I get blood drawn.

After, doc said walking was ok, but nothing major, so DH and I went to the mall for a bit. I felt fine. I made a point of drinking extra water and not driving (hey, that's what dh is for..), and I took it slightly easy for the next 24 hours (the time rec'd by my doc).

Before the procedure, we had our big ultrasound - 45 minutes of checking out every square inch of LO. We got a 'best guess' at the sex then, but it  took the amnio to confirm for certain. Anyway, the big ultrasound was at 10:15 am, the amnio was scheduled for 1:15. During the amnio, the doc took a quick look before prepping my abdomen, located 'the spot', then prepped me and did the amnio. All told, it was under 5 minutes of looking at Libby during the procedure itself. We did get to see her, but not a ton of detail. If you don't have the big ultrasound at the same time, you may not see too much of your baby.

It's nothing to worry about at all. And the peace of mind you will get from knowing what's up with baby is well worth the small discomfort. Good luck! If you have any other questions, I'd be happy to try to answer them Smile

  • Mine was pretty much a piece of cake. The actual drawing of fluid took maybe a minute, and while it felt a touch uncomfortable when the needle went in and out (not really pain, just a little crampy), it was over before I knew it. I kept my eyes closed so I wouldn't see the needle. We got a nice, long ultrasound beforehand with good pictures. My doctor recommended bedrest for 48 hours after, so I just took it easy and tried to stay off my feet.

Good luck--for me the anticipation was way worse than the procedure!

  • I had one in July. We did not have a big ultrasound on the same day but we could see her a little during the procedure.  It was not bad at all.  While the tube was in,  it felt like a big long cramp.  My little one was interested in the tube and grabbed it twice.  This did not hurt her just made the procedure longer.  I did spot a little afterwards and the next day. I wouldn't even say it was painful at all but this is my 4th pg and I have had a c-section and 2 VBACs.  GL

  • How uncomfortable was the procedure? Not nearly as bad as I had imagined...the worst (if I can even call it that it was just kind of odd feeling) part was when they sucked the fluid out.  I just looked at the ceiling the entier time.

Were you uncomfortable after? I had one minor contraction before I got off the table and that was it.

Did you remain on bedrest for 48 hrs after procedure? No, my doctor just told me no strenous activities for 24 hours.  I did it before a long weekend and took it really easy and just sacked out most of the time just to be on the safe side.

Did you get to see LO in the ultrasound?  Yes.  Briefly...the MD's just checked LO's heartbeat, measured LO and then located a pocket of fluid (which took about 2 minutes and that).  Afterwards they showed me the heartbeat again.

  • I thought it was very painful.  Afterwards I just felt crampy (lasted a few hours)  We did get to see our LO in the u/s beforehand and that's when we learned it's a boy (2 wks before our Big U/S was scheduled).  I rested the rest of that day but was told I could go back to normal activity the next day if I was feeling fine (which I was).

  • When I had mine it didn't hurt at all.  My doctor said I would feel three pinchy feelings, and then minor cramping as he drew the fluid, and he was right.  One twinge when the needle first went in, one twinge when he went through the muscle or whatever, and one when it entered the uterus.  The cramping as he drew the fluid was hardly noticeable for me.  I took it easy for a day afterward, but I didn't feel any different.

  • Mine followed an extended U/S.  The needle stick to the uterus created a mild-moderate crampy sensation.  Fluid removal was unnoticed.  I looked at my DH throughout the procedure.  I worked [at home, seated, computer] for about 2 hours after the procedure.  I would NOT do that again.

I felt better lying flat on my back than being upright/seated.  I spent the rest of the day supine and laid low the entire weekend.  My amnio was on a Friday.

I would do the entire thing over again in a heartbeat!  Best to schedule on a day when you can rest for 48-72 hours...  You will see lots of pix of the little one, and find out gender if you are interested!
