High Cholesterol??!!

With the upcoming arrival of our new baby, my husband and I decided to purchase life insurance.  We had the nurse come to our home and run the standard tests.  Well, we just received our results, and my cholesterol level was 279!  I was a normal weight before pregnancy and haven't had any health issues in the past.  My weight gain has been normal.  I don't eat outrageously.  I "could" exercise more, but...??

All of you know how much blood work pregnant mothers go through, especially during the beginning phases of the pregnancy.  Do our OBs just not check for cholesterol?

I consulted the Internet, and read that pregnancy can cause high cholesterol, especially during the third trimester.  Does anyone have first-hand experience?  I will certainly be consulting my doctor at my next appointment.

Re: High Cholesterol??!!

  • Being pregnant makes your body all outta whack. I know that where my Mom works at, during the health screening, they won't even screen pregnant women. They can't rely on the results because everything is high/low/off.

You can discuss it with your OB, but it may just be due to the pregnancy and not a concern.

  • My OB and I just talked about this. He said pregnant women are not even supposed to be cholesterol tested. Your hormones cause cholesterol to go through the roof. It will drop again after the baby is born.

  • Most doctors don't test for cholesterol during pregnancy because it is unnecessary. Your cholesterol levels can change during pregnancy and a lot of the medications that are used to treat high cholesterol are category x anyway. I think you can have your life insurance redone after pregnancy so that way you aren't paying the higher premium.
