Can 4 year olds eat popcorn?

I'm getting my niece a movie theater gift card for her birthday and wanted to put together a little movie themed gift basket. I know kids aren't supposed to eat popcorn until like forever, but what about at 4? Is that a popcorn safe age?

  • Well all food can be a chocking hazard. Anyway, DD(2) eats popcorn just fine.
  • Did I totally make up that popcorn is some sort of extra-special choking hazard???

  • My soon to be 3 year old does just fine. He does flip his shit when it gets stuck in between his teeth though.

I just let DD have popcorn a few weeks ago (she is almost 3). I just made sure that I scooped hers out without any unpopped kernels. I think a 4 year old is just fine.

Edit: the reason we just did it was because we rarely eat popcorn. The last time I made some when she was around she was probably 1.

No the nurses at my work always tell me to be careful when I let her eat popcorn. I know she isn't allowed to bring it into the Y daycare due to it being a choking hazard. That being said she's eaten it since she was older than 2.

Nope! It's more than the kernels too. They can inhale the actual popcorn pieces. Without getting into too much detail, that can be reallllly bad.

Yeah I thought aspirating popped corn was the risk, not the unpopped kernels. DD has had it since about 2 but I supervise.

  • Yeah, my 18 month old has been eating a little bit of popcorn here and there for a couple of months. I've heard of it being choking hazard, however she hasn't had any issues. I assume a four year old should be able handle it.

  • I don't let my 3.5 yo have it. I buy puff corn for her. I also don't allow her to eat raw baby carrots unless I cut them up and still slice her hot dogs and grapes into quarters. It's not worth the risk.

  • Yes. I took DD to see "Frozen" last week and she polished off an entire small tub of it.
    Eta: she's almost 4
