Hey, ladies! For the past 2 weeks or so, my 19 month old DS has taken over a 3 hour nap every day. He's going on 3 1/2 hours today with no sign of stirring.
He used to take 1 1/2 or 2 hour naps. His bedtime is the same and he sleeps well during the night. Bedtime is at 8:30pm and he wakes up around 7:00am. That's at least 13 1/2 hours of sleep in a 24 hour period.
Oh, and he did not recently drop from 2 to 1 nap. He's been taking just one nap a day for months now.
Did your LOs do this? It's just so much sleep that it makes me wonder what's up! Thanks!
Re: Toddler Napathons!
I have no idea what's going on with your LO, but as PP said, who cares? Just more "me" time for you!
DS sleeps about 12 hours at night (not solidly) and usually takes a 2.5-3 hours nap each day. There have even been a few days (usually after a long weekend) when he's slept 4+ hours. Those rare days are awesome.
He definitely is growing, though, so that might have something to do with it. He slept 4 hours for his nap today! Makes me feel like we have very little awake time to play, because DH is home soon after he wakes and then it's dinner, walk, and bedtime routine.
I'd say your friend's kids are the outliers, most toddlers need ~14hrs of total sleep and do around 11-12 at night and 2-3hrs nap.
My LO recently took a 3.5hr on Sunday and then 4hr on Monday, but he was also running a mild fever and pretty unhappy all day Monday so I'm sure that's why.
But even when he's feeling great about 2.5hrs is his normal nap length, with 11-12hrs at night.
3 hour naps were not unusual for my kids when they were that age. In 'fact, our whole schedule was pretty much just like yours: bedtime between 8 and 8:30, morning wake up between 6:30 and 7.
They actually slept longer/better as toddlers and into their preschool years than they did as babies. I think kids are more physically and neurologically active in the toddler years, and they need that sleep. It never affected my kids' ability to sleep at night, either. Well, not until they were older preschoolers and ready to give up nap.
