Unfortunately Anna's hydrocephalus has progressed to the point where we have to implant a VP shunt. We are so disappointed. Her fluid levels went up and down in the NICU as her brain absorbed the bleeds (grade 4 and 2) and when we came home they had stabilized but over the last two months her ventricles have increased dramatically. She is still not showing any signs of distress from the pressure, but her ventricles are restricting the growth and development of the remaining parts of her brain and we certainly don't want to let that happen.
I am having a really hard time because this is something that is so permanent. We were lucky to bring Anna home with no oxygen or monitors, no special feeding requirements, etc. She acted and looked like a normal baby her adjusted age and it was easy to forget about what her MRIs look like and just enjoy her. I hope I can still do that when her head is shaved and she has a huge scar and a thing sticking out of her skull and every time I pick her up I can feel the tubes running done into her abdomen. Just really having a pity party over here.
Anyway, please keep us and her surgeon in your thoughts on Monday morning!

I'm sorry you are facing this-I know it must be a very scary surgery. Thinking of you all as you prepare for surgery on Monday.
I think you have been referred to my friend's blog before, but her most recent post might bring you some hope https://hydrobabies.blogspot.com/
Our precious girl, born at 27 weeks.
I'm so glad you can see the bigger picture and have a positive attitude about it. I will be thinking of Anna and hope that her procedure is smooth and easy. You are a strong momma!
