Tom's of Maine

Hi all! Have any of you tried Tom's of Maine Wild Lavender deodorant? I recently wanted to find a deodorant without aluminum while I'm pregnant and came across this one. It smells good, just want to know if its a safer option and if it actually works. Any thoughts? Hope you're all feeling and doing amazing!

Re: Tom's of Maine

  • I use Secret. I will let you know when the Aluminum kills me. :)

You have intrigued me. I am now googling aluminum and pregnancy.

  • I've found that I like the Arm & Hammer natural deodorant more than Tom's. It's just a personal preference though. Tom's works well too - although I didn't use the scented one because I'm allergic to scents.

  • I haven't tried that, but I really like Desert Essence Tea Tree Oil Lavender deoderant, also aluminum free. Though, it didn't work well on our hot trip to Kansas last year, but it's perfect year round in cooler Seattle. And, I just prefer to avoid aluminum where I can, pregnant or not. I've used this deodorant for about two years, I think.

My dad loves the crystal, you can now get it in a roll on. Amazon carries it. Have you heard of that one? https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Stick-Body-Deodorant-sticks/dp/B000L978FU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362542764&sr=8-1&keywords=deodorant+crystal

That's exactly what I use, and it works pretty well.

  • To answer your question, I have personally never used it. My MIL uses that very deodorant. She never has a BO smell, so it seems to work for her.

ETA: I see her almost daily.

  • If you are going to believe that the aluminum chloride in most deodorants is harmful I question why you would use Tom's of Maine. Tom's contains propylene glycol

    https://exploreancientmedicine.wordpress.com/tag/propylene-glycol/

I don't see anything wrong with using regular deodorant or products with propylene glycol IMO. I just think it's funny people hear one thing and go with it-it seems if you are bothered by aluminum you would be bothered by propylene glycol too.

  • Toms of Maine gave me a chemical burn in my armpits.... Talk about painful.

Lol yeah I hadn't heard of it either, until my doctor told me. I'm sure it really doesn't make a difference what deodorant you use; just up to preference.

I actually have recently heard of it, I need to buy it and try it out. No harm in trying it! Thanks for the tips and suggestions!

Nice! So I'll stick to it unless I find something better! Thanks for the comment!

I actually had no idea. I don't read into hype and just go with it, it came from my doc. But I thank you for informing me about this chemical! I looked up your links and immediately wiped off the deodorant. I should have just followed my normal instincts and just stayed with the deodorant I've used before pregnancy! Thanks so much for the info, and baby Thanks you too!
  • please dont get caught up in all that. You would litterally have to live in a bubble if you wanted to protect yourself from all these "dangers" in the world. Do you use a cell phone, drive a car, walk outside.. i mean, deodorant is the least of your worries

did you know there is also lead in lipstick??? but you would have to eat POUNDS of it for it to do anything to you.

  • I do use the lavender Tom's of Maine deodorant - & I'm glad someone posted about the other chemicals in it - I had no idea.. My FIL uses the crystal - this is probably the most natural deodorant you can get (I've found it in drugstores & even Walmart). But for me, I sweat like a pig & it does not work. I usually have to switch deodorants every few months to keep them effective - & I'm still usually wet - but not stinky at least! lol You can research any cosmetics, lotions, deodorants here: https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ They test everything.

If you are concerned about chemicals, Tom's of Maine probably isn't the best choice.  I use the crystal deodorant and it works just fine.

I use this too. I also have a stick of the Arm and Hammer that someone gave me. It's ok but I prefer a roll on, personally.

Just so you know Propylene Glycol is in A LOT of beauty products - including that deodorant you used to use - and probably your shampoo and makeup.  Just saying its in a lot of stuff

  • I've used it for years and it works fine. Personally, I don't think anything that keeps you from sweating is a good thing. A biochemist once told me that all that aluminum builds up in the sweat glands and lymph nodes. The body cannot eliminate it; so you can probably guess what could happen. Yeah many people use aluminum based deodorant and their fine. I'm not taking any chances personally. This is something that is absorbed through the skin and into the blood stream unlike a cell phone or driving a car.

I'll check out this one too. I've been into trying new products lately to see which I prefer. Haven't found one I truly loved, even before my pregnancy, so this will be one on my list. Thanks!

Yes it does. It's one of the main ingredients...it even says that on their website
