July 2011 Moms

does LO know ABC's yet

I had a patient tell me today that her daughter knew her ABC's by the time she was 2 years old. we were talking about how much they learn at daycare.

DD went to daycare 2 days a week starting last July -Oct then went once a week now back to 2 days a week at daycare.

she doenst really seem close to knowing her ABC's ..in fact she sometimes gets mad when I start singing it.

does your LO know ABC's?

Re: does LO know ABC's yet

  • She can identify a bunch of letters- maybe a dozen? I wouldn't have thought to start teaching her those yet, but several months ago she started saying "k" whenever she saw a k.... I blame Chicka Chicka Boom Boom. Since she showed an interest, we've been working on them, and she's caught on really quickly.

But she doesn't know the song. :)

  • Yes. DD learned to identify all the letters from alphabet books, and spontaneously started singing the song the other day. It's a little slurred but pretty much the cutest thing in the world. :) She seems very musical... she just seems to pick up songs on her own from hearing them a few times.

  • She knows R for Ruby and we have magnetic fridge letters and she asks me what they are all day long.

    That's about all.

Whatever. She's not even 2 yet. I'll let her learn it naturally for quite some time before I stress about it.

This was great for DD too! We also have used the preschool prep DVDs, and we have the alphabet in her bedroom like they have in school along with all the shapes and numbers. She knows pretty much all of them.
I wouldn't fret about it though. When everyone was doing the 18 month checkin, DD wasn't doing over half of what all the other LOs were doing and she wasn't even talking much yet. I was worried about her but all of a sudden she started catching onto everything and pretty quickly. They all learn at their own speed.

  • I don't think you have anything to be concerned about at all.

    They aren't even 2 yet!

We have foam bathtub letters and DS can identify a lot of them because we talk about them in the tub, but I certainly don't  go out of my way to teach it.

  • Yes,she knows and recognizes all letters and their sounds. She knows them independent of order. She is very advanced verbally, but it's related to her diagnosis.

  • Not even close. He counts to 4, though...LOL.

  • Yes, DD knows all of the letters and sounds. She knows her primary colors and a few others. We work with her a lot and she is in daycare full time and they work with all of the kids. She is also able to recognize some words we write. We are working on numbers now.

  • He recognizes a few letters, but he doesn't say any of them. He can just point them out. I'm not worried about it.

    I honestly hadn't even thought about working with her letters yet, guess that's bad. I'm thrilled that she's counting though... one, two, five, six, sebben, six, sebben, six, sebben.... and so on. :onbsp;

This made me smile, because dd says "Sebben" too, and it's absolutely adorable! She picked up counting quickly, and counts everything, including the number of feet I have over and over.

As for letters, she knows A and C, but that's really it. I'm not pushing her to become the next Einstein. She loves learning at her own pace, and it's more enjoyable for all of us. It's really amazing to watch them show off new skills though!
  • We're still working on the whole not screaming thing here. Ill be happy when he starts using words, abcs arent even on our radar.

Though, he can count to 3 but only because he hears me say it so often as a form of pre-discipline.

  • Hahahaha.... Nope. Not even close. She also doesn't know colors, shapes or animals. Or anything else really because I don't work on this stuff with them until they are much older.
  • The thought of working on letters hadn't even crossed my mind before this post. So, my answer is no.

  • Lets answer this with the question

Does your child talk daily? No

My DD (who is almost 3) is just now starting on letter and number identification. We rarely sing the tradition ABC song, instead we're working on true identification. As in if I pull out the letter W she will go "W wah-wah W" She does know they go in an order and we have many books about that. But in reality organization of the letters into the alphabet is less important than identification and sound.

  • Yes, DD knows the song and can identify most of the letters. She is very musical. Some of it I think comes from day care and books. She sings Twinkle Twinkle, Baa Baa Black sheep, Itsy Bitsy Spider, and Happy Birthday.

  • Not even close.  She isn't even doing full sentences.  She's like "oh, dis. oh...dis?"    (Oh, this.  Oh this?)  everything is "this" and "that" right now.   She does know all of the names of her body parts, though, as well as the "head, shoulders, knees and toes" song.

  • Yes, she knows her ABC's. She also can identify the letters of her name and spell her name. She can identify maybe 8 other letters that aren't in her name. She can count to 18. Not sure why she stops there but she does. lol. She also can identify about 7 basic shapes.

I'm a home daycare provider with a mix aged group so most of these things are done on a daily bases. She also loves to sing.
  • Dd can identify the letters and enjoys doing it. She doesn't know the song though.

  • Not ABC's but she can count to 13.  She recognizes and knows that her name starts with "H" but that's about it as far as the alphabet.
