Special Needs

Special Instruction vs. ABA?

Can anyone tell me the major differences between these two types of things as related to ASD or PDD-NOS (DS2's dx). We need to choose which route we want to take, and I am getting such conflicting advice from his behavioral pedi and his EI people. DS has mild symptoms (almost all social), and ABA seems so strict.

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated!

  • I teach preschool special ed and run a behaviorally based classroom (supervised by a BCBA and I'm working towards certification).  Special instruction is often listed on IEP's when my kiddos move on to K and it can mean just about anything that isn't instruction delivered with the rest of the class by the general ed teacher.  Most districts around me do not have BCBA's on staff though some bring in my co-workers to consult.  ABA cannot be listed on IEP's in my state, which I don't understand but it's the deal.  A good behaviorist (BCBA, BCaBA or behavior tech with proper supervision) can use the principles of behavior to teach in both one on one and naturalistic settings.  SO the questions to ask are about background/certification/licensure (depending on state availability) and how the therapist will address your child's areas of need.

  • Thanks to you both. We may possibly get an SI teacher who has an ABA background, so this could be the best of both worlds for us.
