Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

walking

My LO just turned 14 months old.  He still isn't walking unassisted - and I know that this isn't terribly uncommon, so I'm not too worried about it, the thing that I am slightly concerned with is his foot position when he stands/walks.  He does great walking with his push toy and will zoom all over the place, but for the past 2-3 weeks, we've noticed that when he walks behind his toy (and even when he walks holding onto our fingers), his left foot turns out..sometimes to a 90 degree angle.  If he is barefoot, his foot turns out and he also steps with the inside of his foot the majority of the time.  We go to the doctor next month for his 15 month appointment so will bring it up then - but just wanted to check to see if anyone else has noticed anything similar......

 Thanks

Re: walking

  • I'm no expert on what's normal or anything and I definitely feel like you should bring it up with your pedi just in case but I feel like it's kind of normal for babies to walk funny at first. At least DS did and does. He is 14 months and just started really walking about three weeks ago. He walked with his feet turned out a lot at first but now he doesn't do that as much. He also walked without bending his knees for the first two weeks or so. As he has worked on mastering walking things have improved. He really didn't start walking "normally" until this week, and even now he sometimes looks pretty funny. He also walks on his tip toes quite a bit still. I wouldn't worry about it at all but ask your pedi just in case.

  • DS is 15 months old, and he literally just walked on his own this past weekend.  He has been using the walker forever.  He also has a turned out foot (sounds exactly like what you described), and when I asked the Pedi about this, he said it's totally normal and that many, many babies have this same thing and that it will change over time with eventual walking.  We even brought the walker into the office to show our Pedi when he walks, and he was not worried at all.
  • DS started walking about 1 week after turning 15 months old.  Just got up one day and did it.  He probably could do it sooner, but he didn't believe he could yet.  I wouldn't worry at all yet.
