running mommas who had c-sections

Hi ladies. Before I got pregnant with DS I was planning on starting a running routine. I din't have the time or desire to go to a gym, and I figured running would be a good workout I can work around my schedule. And I can take the kids with me. Well, I started couch to 5k but got pregnant, so I stopped. I want to get back into it. Should I do a program that eases me into it, or just start jogging? I had my c-section 9 weeks ago, do you think it will be ok to start running now if I wasn't a runner before?

I'm sick of feeling gross about my body and want to start getting back in shape. I've been walking 4-5x/week since about 3 weeks post partum. Any suggestions other than couch to 5k to help get me running? One of my life goals was to run a half marathon. I have a long way to go haha.

Re: running mommas who had c-sections

  • You should be fine, as long as your doc had cleared you. Just start slow. The last thing you want to do is injure yourself. Try jogging 10 minutes every other day for a week, then increase by a couple of minutes each week until you get to 30 minutes. At that point, you can start training for the half. If I remember correctly, beginner training guides are 14 weeks, so give yourself plenty of time before the race. I'm running one in November, and training starts in August. I'm still working myself back up to 30 minutes. Good luck and enjoy it!

I woudl talk to your doc.  I'm a runner -- as in, I run marathons -- and I also had a c section, and still havent' gotten back into the running routine yet.  My doc cleared me, but said I should wear 2 sports bras (i'm nursing and very large breasted), and if it hurts, stop!

Also, is there a reason you don't want to do couch to 5K again?  I think it is a great way to get back into it -- in fact, after 9 months off, I'lL Probably use it (tht is how I started running too, a decade ago!)
