Cloth Diapering

Can you just use water with cloth wipes?

I am debating whether to use cloth wipes with our cloth diapers, or whether we should just use Earth's Best disposable wipes.  I read on an Internet site that you could use cloth wipes with water to clean a baby's bum.  Does that really work (i.e. is water really enough) or do you need to create some sort of special solution to apply to the baby's bum?  I'm not sure if we are up for creating a solution, with everything else on our plate with a newborn... unless there is something easy we could do.  Any tips are much appreciated!

Re: Can you just use water with cloth wipes?

  • I use just water. Works great. I really think making a super fancy solution for wiping your babies butt is unnecessary.

Yeah. I used to make a super fancy solution...until I realized that plain water worked just as well.

  • I use warm water and a squirt of Dr. Bronner's (or any baby wash, we just use this stuff for little mans eczema) and pour over the wipes in our warmer.

  • Yep, keep it simple! I just use water in a spray bottle! Cloth wipes with cloth diapers are also simpler because then all the components can be tossed in the wet bag and you don't have to separate the wipes out to throw away.

  • I have always used disposable wipes. My son has never had "ploppable poo" and I was not dealing with spraying off little squares of fabric.

I use dry cloth wipes and wet with water from a peri bottle as needed. Works perfectly.

Yodamistress makes a good point, though. Once we start solids I may switch to disposables for poop.

Yes, bc of all the aspects of CDing this is by far the hardest.

Lol. Not sure what that means? I have found everything about CDinv pretty easy and straight forward. But nothing about getting gobs of PB poo off cloth wipes seems even remotely easy. Especially since I work FT and my SAHH leaves all the poppy dipes to crustify all day and then I deal with them in the evenings.

We all draw the line about what kind of commitment we can make to the environment somewhere. For me, it's cloth wipes. ::shrug::

  • As a newborn LO was irritated by disposable wipes. We used cloth with warm water for a month, then with cold water because she didn't mind and I was tired of running the water at the sink. Now I make solution because I find it works better cold than water (works the same as warm water, but smells nicer lol).

So with a wipes warmer I'd do water, without I'd do solution.

  • I just use regular wash cloths with water. For the first change of the day I usually put a drop of baby wash on it as I'm running warm water on it. I think disposable wipes are more difficult than cloth. I have to go take the disposable down to the trash since I don't want poopy wipes hanging out in the open bathroom trash can whereas with the washcloths I just swish those, squeeze them out and throw them in the wet bag.

  • Yes you can use water. We use the peri bottle we got at the hospital and keep that at the changing table.

  • Since I change LO on the bathroom counter for now until he gets too long for it, I just wet the wipe in the sink. This has worked great for my family.

I used cloths wet with a spray bottle of water (I agree that it's easier not to separate disposable wipes from the diapers) until my daughter began eating solids.

Then I began using disposable wipes for non-solid poop only (I didn't feel that I was getting enough off the cloths from the smeary poops), keeping cloth with water for everything else.

You just have to find what works for you.  Good luck!

It takes 2 seconds to hold a corner and spray both sides. So one has been sitting in it so its not caked in.

I could care less If you use cloth wipes, I'm just not sure how this contributed to the conversation.

First you didn't think my comparison / discussion of hybrid versus traditional fitteds was germain to a thread. Now this. Not sure what to say 'cept I guess I'm an irrelevant, rouge, posting fool.

Yeah, that one took me a minute.  I thought you were saying something different than you were.

But here she asked if you could just use water, not if cloth wipes were hard.  It's like when someone asks if fleece works with circumcision and someone says to use sposies.  Not answering the question.

I pop on here intermittently for entertainment when I have 3 or 5 minutes to kill. So. I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that I could misunderstand or misinterpret a post and thus my response might be off base.

However, in this case, the first sentence of her post says she is CONSIDERING using cloth wipes. In general, I respond to chat board posts as "chat". It's a discussion. My response was certainly related even if not from the narrowest interpretation.

  • I've used wipe solutions in the past, but honestly plain old water works just as well.

  • I use a wipe warner and plain water for my cloth wipes. I was originally thinking of using some type of solution but I didn't like the idea of any soap residue being on her, even if it was a small amount. I might be a little anal about it, but water has ended up working just fine.
