This is why I am against formula.  Keagan was on this when it was recalled. There were fuckiiing beetles and larvae IN HIS FORMULA.

    No thanks.

Also, neither of the GI's that I saw (that have no idea how dedicated I am to BFing suggested trying formula.

No, I don't agree with everything both of the GI's have said, but I am still taking their advice and doing what they are suggesting.  I asked the GI yesterday if I would be better off doing a TED, or bringing him to an allergist, he said no, eliminate eggs and beef, and we will do the x-ray and go from there.

I don't need y'all to make me feel like a shiity mom.  I am doing my best and what I think is right for my child.  I appreciate the support, and the opinions, but you can leave the negativity at the door.  I have my reasons for doing what I am doing, and have the help of doctors to try to figure out what is going on.

You do realize the FDA has acceptable levels of insect parts and hairs that are allowed in all foods before they would be recalled, right?  Pretty much everything you eat, and that your baby/kids eat will have some level of insect parts in it.  It's just unavoidable.  Formula sounds like the best next step for your baby.  8 months is a long time for him to suffer while you are "figuring things out."

That FDA recall happened almost 3 years ago. I think it is time to get over it.

In all seriousness, Holly, will you at least THINK about trying formula instead of completely dismissing it? I would hate for that to be a solution and your boy still having to suffer because you won't give it a try.

Holly -  I don't think anyone is trying to guilt you or call you a bad mom. You are neck deep in the situation every day. They are offering an outside point of view. Sometimes it's hard to see the forest for the trees, especially when there are so many emotions involved.

Yes, that formula recall was scary, but we can't live in compete fear of our food supply. One look at the FDA recall page is enough to send my blood pressure through the roof.  https://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/default.htm

I'm all for trusting drs since they went to med school, but they are people too and medicine isn't a black and white thing.   Sometimes you need to try everything you can to get them better, then slowly back off until you find what's wrong. That was the point of my "go big or go home" comment. Jump all in with the diet instead of piecemealing it. You've done the dairy elimination diet so you know how long it takes to clear your system. Try it all now and then slowly add back if he gets better. What would it hurt?

UO: I think being a picky eater as a grown asss adult is ridiculous. Everyone is entitled to have foods they don't like, but seriously, if it helps your kid, embrace the broccoli.

    I hope this isn't a UO.

Holly, I'm going to up and say it--your reasoning for avoiding formula is the worst I've ever heard.  In fact, it's not even reasoning.  It's an emotional, gut reaction that has nothing to do with logic or reality.  Foods and items--even and especially those for babies--get recalled all the time.

Look, you've said you don't want formula because of this, you don't want formula because of the cost, you don't want formula because you want to keep breastfeeding for the bond.  See the word in all those phrases?  Want.  You want to keep BFing.  If you need to stop to make your son feel better, your wants go out the window in my book.  You should be open to that.  And to the other things docs and those here have suggested--elimination diet included.

How on earth is it that you're willing to do all this stuff, and him continue to suffer, and spend money that we all know you don't have on doctor's apts. and what not and not just do a TED for a month, then add in whole foods one at a time, keep a diary, take notes, and figure this sht out?

But of course, as I say that I still don't even think that's the greatest because that takes time and you've already taken far too long in pretty much everyone's opinion.

And I know what kind of food you eat because we've talked about diet due to going through the MFPI stuff together. Your diet isn't great. You'd think if you care THAT MUCH about what may be in the odd formula canister, that you'd not eat like you do.

You're just being stubborn. And even though you're doing all sorts of things, you're not doing everything. And I fault you for that.

It happened when my older son was on that formula.  Too close to home for me.

Holly, you're being an unreasonable biitch to someone who has supported you A LOT in the past. Get over yourself and get some relief for that poor child.

Ah yes, she totally is being supportive by telling my I'm a crap mom for not going on a TED, my diet sucks and I'm taking too long to find a solution to a problem that up until recently you all said wasn't a problem and I was being a drama queen about.

I have been trying for months to figure out the problem, don't you think I want my child better? Do you think I enjoy hearing him scream at night? NO. OF COURSE NOT.

That is why I am bringing him to specialists, changing pediatricians, and altering my diet. FFS

You have been biitching about this same issue for 8 months.  Same story, different day.  You have received every piece of advice known to man on the subject and have refused to take any of it, especially anything that might be related to formula (because there were bugs in in one time?  really?  My kid licked a stranger's shoe at a party the other day...) and I think people are just sick of it.  You clearly only enjoy the hand wringing and attention.

If you really wanted to end this and soothe your child, you would have tried something else by now.

WTF?! The ONLY advice I haven't taken is the one to put him on formula. I have done every single fuckiiing thing that has been suggested to me here, and by the doctors. thanks.

Kristy has and is living what you are living. She discovered a plan that works for Adiah. Look past the end of your stuck up nose for once and realize that we are actually trying to help.

I totally get that. I am taking the steps that she took to figure out what is wrong with my child.  Every  person here at this point is telling me to put my kid on formula, and that I'm a shIitty selfish mom for not putting him on formula.  that isn't helping me.

It sounds like you want 3 things:

    1) To BF

    2) To eat what you want to eat

    3) Colby to feel better.

I think, given what I know about this situation, it's a "pick 2" thing. You could probably BF with a total elimination diet and see results (1 and 3) or give a special formula and see results (2 and 3).

I don't think that 1, 2, and 3 are really possible. It sucks but I think 3 is the most important so you probably have to choose between 1 and 2.

I have been dairy free for over 5 months. I'm past the point of eating what I want to eat.  I want 1 and 3. I am willing to do whatever I need to do.  I asked the GI yesterday if I needed to do a TED and he confidently told me no.  So at this point, do I just do it anyway?

I'm sorry but no. You've known about the TED for a long, long time. And while you didn't have to go on it when I did (and I felt guilty enough for how long I put it off), you would think that sometime in the past 5 months you would have tried it.

And our Pedi. allergist and GI didn't tell me I had to do it either. But I'd done it already for a month when I went in because I wanted information to present to her. They told me I could have just eliminated one food at a time, every two weeks. Um, no. If they were at home with my kid, and they had half a heart, and they were as stubborn about BFing as I was, they would just eat pretty much nothing... just to see. And yes I was blacking out. It wasn't healthy. And yes my milk supply plummeted. And it wasn't good. And so that's when we began to switch to formula, but I also stuck with the diet, started adding things in one at a time, pumped like a fiend to see if I could re-up my supply and lo and behold, a few weeks later I was making enough and haven't needed the Rx formula.

I also suggest trying to bottle feed because he would get a better mix of FM/HM and wouldn't have to deal with your let down. Even though you may think these things aren't the issue... you don't know.

I'm so over you, but my heart hurts for your kid. That's the only reason I'm still replying.

No. In the beginning he had weight gain challenges and Jaundice issues, the Pedi pushed pretty hard then and I told him it wasn't going to happen. He hasn't brought it up since.

I would try it anyway if it were me. It would be boring but it would most likely yield pretty concrete ANSWERS, which it seems like you want. You're not getting it from doctors, so might as well attempt to get it for yourself.

I feel like TED would also be helpful because of figuring out what to be cautious about giving him for solids.

Absolutely I have known about it. Your child was inconsolable, and you were having nasty diapers and reactions. My child is a happy baby 75% of the time. The only time he isn't happy is when he is sleeping.  His poops and diapers are fine, he is exhibiting signs of reflux. I NEVER thought that he could possibly still be reacting to something that I was eating, or else I would have done a TED months ago. But, I couldn't figure out what the issue was, so I brought him to a specialist, not one, but two.  He gets bottles when he is home with DH and he gets a bottle of pumped milk before bed.  Would you suggest bottle feeding entirely for 24 hours?

Like I have said, I am open to constructive advice.  I know you have BTDT. Formula is a last resort for me, where it might be a first resort to others.  I would hope that you understand that.

    Cool story bro.

FFS

Not every person has said that. Actually, I don't recall anyone saying those exact words. You are just taking our posts that way. Again, please just consider trying formula....

I have done every single fuckiiing thing that has been suggested to me here, and by the doctors. thanks.

So you have tried the TED diet?  Apparently I missed that post.

the TED diet that the GI said I didn't have to go on, but was suggested to me on here TODAY? No, not yet. Dinner is already in the crock pot so I'm going to start it tomorrow morning, that cool?

from what Kristy said, she told you about this diet, 5 months ago, or sometime over the last 5 months, if I remember that's about the time she started to try and figure out what her DDs problem was? Correct me if I am wrong, Kristy.

It has been no secret that you and Kristy have been supporting each other in the whole MSPI thing, so yeah, I doubt Kristy didn't mention to you at some point in your discussions on here and possibly in private about what was working for them.

I also am confused as to why they aren't trying to rule one or the other out, trying to simultaneously treat both of these issues won't pinpoint which one it is. It could be both, but the likelihood it is BOTH is slim.

I agree with you. That is why we are doing the X-ray next week to get some answers on the reflux.  I doubt the issue is both things, but I'm not a doctor.  The problem is he isn't presenting with clear symptoms of either, his only sympoms could be because of reflux OR diet (which I didn't realize until yesterday)

She wasn't inconsolable, not even hardly. There were points, but only when I was trying to BF her and at night. Otherwise she's a very happy, very little crying baby... even when she was suffering from her reflux. Which is also why I had to fight to get her treated because she wasn't miserable. And as you often told me, green icky diapers doesn't mean it's intolerance... but I didn't care, I knew something was up. And yes, we did have blood a few times, but not often, and never very much. But again, lo and behold, when we got to what we're doing now... all the green poop went away, as did every other issue I was loosing my sht on this board about.

And yes, I would try EPing and bottle feeding... for a few days. I noticed a different with that within a few days. I also did both at around the same time because I was desperate so while I don't know which helped more... I feel like both are helping. Plus, she just refused to BF a few days into bottle feeding because she's a stubborn little person. But she's better, and that's all that mattered to me.

Holly, I think you're there. Rather, I think Colby is there. If he is only having these issues at night, GIVE HIM FORMULA BEFORE BED.

BF the rest of the time if there is no issue, but do formula before bed. TRY IT. Just try it. It's not a lifetime commitment.

    EDIT

sorry, posted too soon.  I am waiting for the results of the Xray on tuesday, then we will make a decision.  Is that cool? In the meantime I will be doing a TED.

You obviously feel backed in a corner. Your sarcasm font was quite obvious and unnecessary. I've tried to be nice and supportive in every post on this today. I've been there with a kid with an undiagnosed issue. It was respitory for us, but it's hard and frusterating. It doesn't excuse you for getting nasty with people tying to help.

I hope you find a solution, but keep in mind these random strangers on the Internet have nothing to gain by giving you advice. They are trying to help you and your kid b

For argument sake, why not try the formula tonight before bed and see if it makes a difference. If it helps AWESOME, Colby is feeling better and he doesn't have to go through an unnecessary Xray. If it doesn't help, you already have the appointment for the Xray and you can start TED in the morning.

he is MPI, he has to have neocate (I think thats the one that is milk free, not positive) Anyway, I need a prescription for it in order to even have a glimmer of hope of my insurance covering it (which I don't even know if they will or not) I'm at work until 2am, so that isn't going to happen today.

Tomorrow maybe? I am not familiar with that formula. Can you buy it over the counter and then have your insurance reimburse you once you get a script? I just googled it and it is like $35 a can. IMO, I think it is worth a try....

You won't know, Holly, if insurance won't cover it until you try.

You've been feeding us that BS excuse for months now. You just don't know if your insurance will cover it. You've had plenty of time to figure it out, but you've been inactive on that piece of it. You haven't tried, because you keep saying you don't know if they will.

I understand that.  It hasn't even been on my mind to try formula until it was thrown in my face today that ZOMG GET THAT POOR BABY ON FORMULA

so I haven't looked into it.

Even though you have said in the past, on this board, multiple times that you think he'd need Rx formula that you don't know if your insurance will cover? I'm calling it. My BS meter is off the freaking charts.

Anita, that was MONTHS ago. when we were going through the MPI diagnosis. He was 8 weeks at the time.

    Yeah, ok.

No. at 8 weeks It was suggested to me, I got his issues (congestion, bloody mucousy stool) under control by avoiding dairy, and never thought about formula again until today.

    Holly knows best.

OMG. LL, I have taken every single suggestion here and from the doctors.  I may not agree with them, but I still give it a try.  the only thing I haven't done is formula. because as I have said its a last resort thing for me.  I am waiting to see what the x ray shows on tuesday, then we will decide where to go from there.  If the issue isn't reflux and purely diet then we will figure out how to get him on some formula.

    1. According to what you've shared here, his problems have never been under control.

    2. Formula has been suggested to you multiple times. Both on TB and you've said your doctor suggested it.

    3. I still call BS.

His bloody poop and excess mucous and general fussiness is very much under control.

My doctor has not suggested it since he was 3 weeks old (as I have mentioned multiple times in this thread) and neither of the GI's I saw in the past 3 weeks suggested it

    call it all you want.
