co sleeping

Ds almost 17 mnths sleeps with me every night and i love it. However hoe am i ever going to get him in his own bed? So far my mom stays with him once a week so its no big deal really but what about any other time. What di you all.do when you leave during the night?

Re: co sleeping

  • Transitioning your child to sleep on his own is done the same way as anything else.  With love, consistency, and a bit of firmness.  Especially at this age he might be more resistant to breaking the routine.

I'm a bit confused with the last part of your post.  Do you work at night and your mom is there to watch over him?

Honestly, the way we put LO to bed is probably not ideal, but it works for us, and unless he's sick or teething he STTN. We take turns lying down with him with lullabies on, then when he falls asleep we get up and leave.  Well...DH always falls asleep too...so when he wakes up after a while he leaves. That's it.

Once a week i play Volleyball but i just mean in general say if i want to go out to dinner with.dh or.friends or really anything after hebis in bed.
  • Gotcha.  We've been lucky enough that our kids tend to sleep really well and if they do ever wake up it doesn't happen until after midnight.  I would imagine that if I were in your situation I would work on the transitioning until it went consistently well for at least a month.  This is assuming that there haven't been any illnesses, teething, major schedule changes, etc.  Once the kids have done fairly well sleeping on their own for that long than I would probably venture out either just me or just DH for another month before moving onto a date night.  If we were using sitters this is the schedule I would probably follow.  If it were a family member I might risk it a lot sooner.

This - except DH is always the one to put LO down.  At 5 months we began transitioning LO out of our bed (floor mattress) to a crib mattress sidecarred next to our mattress. About 3 times a week, sometime in the middle of the night LO crawls up off his mattress and snuggles in next to DH. But most nights he spends the majority of the night in his own bed.
