Toddlers: 24 Months+

Switching to toddler bed...

I don't know what to do.  For the first time last night, our son climbed out of his crib.  He cried for a few seconds.  Luckily, he leads with his feet and was fine.  He hasn't tried to climb out during nap or bedtime, but he screamed his head off both times (normally, naps and night time are very peaceful, so I'm thinking it's molars or a cold).  So WWYD?  I'm due in one week.  Is it awful if we wait it out to switch to a toddler bed?  I don't want him to hurt himself.  TIA.

Re: Switching to toddler bed...

  • Personally, I would switch my own LO if she had mastered getting out, for fear of that one time she falls funny and breaks something. With my DD, we switched her at 18 months, and it was only 2 nights of horror.

But, I also started PTing my LO the day we got home from the hospital with DD2, so maybe I am just insane ha. I would just rather bite the bullet and get the hard stuff out of the way all together.

  • Our crib was designed to be able to drop the mattress lower, if yours has that option i'd try that first. If you really don't want to switch to a toddler bed, you could try putting extra pillows on the floor around the crib to pad a fall. If he continued to climb out, i would switch.

  • I would try the mattress on the floor and see if that works.  I think making such a big change with a little due in a couple of days you coul see some regression in the older one.
  • Go for it. We switched our son and it was no big deal. He's 26 months and loves his big boy bed

We switched last night and it wasn't as bad as we thought.  LO's crib converts into a toddler bed.  People suggested we put a gate in her doorway so that she wouldn't keep coming downstairs, but it was not necessary.

    good luck!

Good luck.   We turned my DD's crib into a toddler bed in March after she climbed out a few times.   The funny thing (well not at the time) was that even after we took the side off and put the toddler rail there, she still would climb over the front part.   It was like she knew "Well if I do this, then mommy or daddy will come in my room and I won't have to go to sleep".     It was unsafe.   She actually preferred sleeping on the floor.   So we dismantled the crib and left the mattress on the floor.   Silly girl won't lay on the mattress (same mattress she's laid on for over 2 yrs).  She still prefers the floor and gets mad if I try and move her once she's asleep.   Oh and she uses a big floppy dog as a pillow instead of the pillow pet she has.

Yes we plan on getting her a bed.   My son preferred the floor too for a while.  Whatever, as long as she sleeps.  Hopefully once we get the new bed, she'll realize a nice mattress is more comfy than the floor- even if it's carpeted.

  • I lied! Took him a little less than a hour and a few visits of me going in there and taking him to his bed. And he's out in the bed!!!

We switched over a week ago and nap time is still rough.  He was never a great napper, and now that he can get up and move about it takes forever for him to get to sleep.  We've only had one night that he really fought going to bed and although he's been  waking a little bit more at bedtime, he goes to bed fine a week in.

DD never climbed out of her crib, but we decided to switch her to a toddler bed a few weeks ago...at like 25 months. It was a breeze, and in fact she loves it! She had zero issues and I think likes being a "big girl." What's the problem with switching now? Because of the new baby coming?

Yup, baby coming this week and two year molars coming in. So far, it has been a disaster : (

We switched our DD at 22 months and it was ROUGH for about a month (both night time and naps, but especially naps). She would *not* stay in her bed, she cried and called for us constantly. We'd go in, tell her it was sleep time and finally we let her just work through it. I was really stressed about it but we're back in sane sleeping mode now. Just be prepared (just in case) for it to be rough for a while and just *know* it will pass in a matter of time. Hopefully short. Good luck!
