My 23mth toddler is soon to be 2yrs old, How do you decide how much to spend on presents? Do you have a spending limit? Do you buy one gift and a couple of small gifts. I'm probably over thinking this but I'm also wondering what other parents do.
Well, I'm not the best example since my daughter's birthday is Christmas Eve. But I bought her 1 nice thing for birthday and 1 nice thing for Christmas and some little things so she had a bunch of things to open. I think I spent around $300 for birthday and Christmas. This year will be less since I'm expecting dd#2 in June. I'm hoping to get her a kitchen and maybe a few small things so she has things to open.

For Christmas we spent around $100. For his birthday in June (he will be 3) we will spend around $300 (b/c he is getting Magnatiles and a Nabi). We have already decided that for Christmas he will not be getting large gifts from us since he is getting so much now (probably $50 at Christmas).
I'm horrible when it comes to spending money on gifts for my kids. Christmas is more like $500 each and birthday are anywhere from $50 to $150 depending on their want that year.
If I know they are having a big party and Grandparents covered the LOs "must have" gifts then we tone it down. We are fortunate to have such giving grandparents and they most of the time steal our big gift idea leaving us to just grab odds and ends or clothes.
For Christmas and birthdays we spend about $100-$150 per child. For birthdays we usually wait until after the party to see where the holes are and buy him something we feel he needs. I try and get one big thing
I usually start paying closer attention to his interests. Then I give ideas to the grandparents and I end up getting him 1 medlg gift around the 5075 range and pair of sneakers around 50. Christmas is the same except I spread out my purchases starting in nov. This year will be smaller as I still have unopened Christmas gifts.
This birthday we bought her a swing set. She loves being outside, and gets so much use out of it. Plus, I didn't really want one more indoor toy in our house. We just opened the last of her Christmas/Hanukkah gifts, and her birthday is next week. She seriously doesn't need any more things.
Dont tell the parent police but...We only bought DD 1 present a week AFTER her birthday. She had so many people send her presents, she already has so many toys and we figured this would be one of the last years we could get away with not getting her something. What we did end up getting her went along with another present someone else got her.

Totally this. DS doesn't know what's from who, so we'll let the grandparents and family take care of that... I DID get him a beautiful thomas train set from a yard sale last year, and we'll give it to him. I think it was $20 for a box of tracks, trains, and decor. AMAZING.
