Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Communicating and two word sentences

I'm a little worried about ds1. He doesn't say many words. He's chatters and babbles a lot and repeats words. He mainly points and cries if he wants something and is frustrated, he is a genius on the iPad and sings along with songs. He just doesn't call me mama really, though says the word a lot. My pedi told me he should be talking in two word sentences around now. I narrate our entire day, read him six books a night and picture books daily. Any suggestions?  When did your LO really begin to communicate with words?

i know he undstands me, but just not really using his words.

Tia!

Re: Communicating and two word sentences

  • I wouldn't be too worried.  As long as he understands, and knows some simple words, he's probably good to go. If you're worried check into it but I think your pedi is expecting a lot.

My LO will be 2 in July and just in the last week picking up two word phrases other than "What's that?" which was all she's known for months. She didn't for the longest time now she's adding new words left and right every week.

She still doesn't have the vocab of some other kids her age but she truly understands, follows complicated directions and what she does say comes out crystal clear for everyone (not just me) to understand.

FWIW..she also knows Mom...but she doesn't use it with any frequency. Just when she's tired, upset or can't find me.

  • I don't know if I would be worried yet either. I've read to not really worry until they turn 2. Also read that their language will explode what seems to be over night. He might be focusing on other skills right now instead of talking. I think we put too much pressure on our kids sometimes to do the next thing that the book says but they all do it on their own time :)

  • 2 word sentences?  My DS is 17 months and there is no way he'll be using 2 word sentences anytime soon.

My DS understands everything, but only uses mama, dada, milk, more, up, and bubble.  I am genuinely not concerned.

  • Thanks ladies! I have been stressing about this. All of your input was so helpful.

I'm surprised your Dr. Thinks he should be speaking in sentences. My son (who will be 2 in July) has plenty of words but hardly puts 2 of them together.  With the exception of one little girl his age at DC, I can't understand what any of the other toddlers say and they def aren't speaking in sentences.  Give it some time and if you're still concerned when he's two, get an evaluation if your Dr. Recommends.
  • Mine started putting 2 words together just before his 2nd birthday. I believe most pedis want to see that by 2 years old, so you still have a couple months. However, if you are concerned, it wouldn't hurt to have an EI evaluation done.

  • My daughter is right at 20 months and started putting 2 words together a few weeks ago. She will say "daddy's cup" "mommy's shoes" "bye bye plane" or whatever. She says a ton of words. If you are majorly concerned, then talk to your Pedi more about it. If not, realize that all kids are different and learn at different paces.
