Weight gain confusion

I saw in the not feeding solids that several people mentioned weight issues and my DD is right there in those weights but the ped has never made any comment and I have been concerned at all.  DD is in the 25th percentile still and always has been which is perfect for her.   But are these babes not gaining consistently or something?

Re: Weight gain confusion

  • My baby is gaining weight every month, but she was below 10th percentile @ 5 mo.  Pedi was not concerned, but encouraged us to get as much breastmilk in her as possible.  She said "NO WAY!" to my suggestion of starting solids early.  Not big enough for solids yet, she said.  Veggies and cereal are not as calorie-dense as milk.

  • DS was 25th weight and height at his 6 month appt and pedi wasn't concerned at all. He has been there pretty much since birth. He was fine with me starting solids at 4 months, but I waited until 6. I think that as long as they don't drop down the scale dramatically from month to month, they are fine. Babies come in all shapes and sizes just like the rest of us.

  • We had a drop in percentiles from 33rd to 15th and that was concerning despite her chubby look.. But after a second weigh a month later I discovered they were using the cdc chart and we breast f feed so a drop is normal at six months compared to the who chart.  You can Google Kelly mom who versus cdc then et were ok.. I was more worried then the doc the whole time

  • My LO was 40th percentil at 2 month and 25th at 4 months...15th at 5 months...8th at 6 months. At 5 months, the pedi recommended either supplementing with formula or starting solids. Since he was already 5 months, I figured I would just start solids to see if that helped with weight gain. He is gaining about a pound a month...so on the low side of normal. The pedi wasn't worried about him though; my husband and I are both tall and thin (LO is 81st percentile for height) and he is happy and developing well.

  • I was confused too. Ive heard doctors like the baby to be a certain size before they start solids, so i guess there's that. I guess it also depends on the doctors. O has always been between 20-30% and her pedi never seemed concerned and didn't tell me to hold off on solids. She's been gaining weight consistently so I'm guessing that's why the doctor was never concerned.

  • Lucas has always been in the very low end of the weight percentiles.  He was in the 10th percentile at 4 months and dropped to the 5th at 6 months.  That is why our pedi is a little concerned.

his length jumped from the 75th percentile to the 95th in that same time though...so I know he is growing.

  • DD has always been low weight. Started at 15% and at one month was around 2%. She was 5-10% until 6 months and is now about 15% again.

Anyway my doctor has never been concerned.

  • My DD was in the 95% at birth (9 lbs 5 oz) and then was either below the charts or around the 2% her entire 1st year.  The main thing was she was consistently growing but on her own curve.  We went for a couple weight check-ins and she kept growing so that was what they wanted to see.  She was also the 2% for height...she only weighed 16lbs 10oz at 1 year.  She did have a milk allergy so we had to avoid the higher fat foods like cheese...once she outgrew the allergy she gained faster....now that she is 3 1/2 she still is short but is above the 35% for weight.

My husband & I aren't big people...so figuring our kids won't be either....my DS was also the 95% at birth and at 6 months is the 25%...always growing & loves to eat...so the ped hasn't been too concerned either.

Just as long as they continue to grow...that's the most important.
