Worried about DH (NBR)

Holy Crap! DH had a physical this week with blood work and his cholesterol was 315! This makes me very nervous. Neither of us are in GREAT shape, but we are far from severely overweight, and my concern is that the cholesterol problems are genetic. We are looking into seeing what changes we can make to our diet (not that we are at the  drive-thuu) 3 times a week and exercise and possibly medication. Guess the fact that we are having a kid means we aren't kids anymore.

Re: Worried about DH (NBR)

  • This was about DH's number.  I cut out soda except for one a day, buy no added salt items and cut out the drive thru for him (he was there all the time).  I also made him start to eat oatmeal everyday and it went down significantly.  MIL said he's had high cholesterol all his life and when he was younger she "tried" to get it down but didn't work.  Once he ate healthy it went down.

  • Was he fasted for a complete 8 hours minimum? My DH has high cholesterol genetically too, and we watched his diet for the past 6 months and it dropped down to normal levels without meds. He is not overweight and works out diligently and is also in the Air Force. Make sure to watch the seafood, fried food, and full fat dairy like ice cream. Good luck!

  • We are going through the same thing! My husband's is 215 which isn't crazy high but it's enough to worry especially with family history. We can't figure out why either. He eats great and isn't overweight I'm going to try to get him to try oatmeal.

  • Wow, I'd be making some changes too.  If you can do it, diet changes stick a lot better if you both do them.  So bowls of oatmeal for both of you.  And aim for diet changes that satisfy the cravings instead of cutting out the fun stuff completely.   For instance, blending frozen banana chunks with milk, cocoa powder and a little sweetner (if you need it) tastes enough like a regular chocolate shake to me to satisfy my craving for regular ice cream.

  • I have high cholesterol and I got it to go down 20-something points just by taking fish oil everyday.  Your husband may need a daily med or he might be able to control it with diet and exercise.  Healthy changes are never a bad thing, hope his number goes down in the future!
  • Thanks ladies for the support! DH actually eats oatmeal for breakfast almost every morning (as do I)  believe it or not. We're not SUPER unhealthy but far from perfect. I think we are gonna see what exercise more regularly does and then move on to meds if necessary.
