Baby Names

MN dilemma

While my husband and I have not completely settled on a first name for our baby girl, the one that we keep coming back to is Delilah.  We're also considering Lydia and Eloise, but DH is not as big a fan of either of those, so Delilah tends to be discussed the most.  Our problem is coming up with a MN.

Originally, before we even knew the sex of the baby, the plan was to give a girl the MN Susan after my mom, or a boy the MN James after my husband. But when we started talking about the name Delilah, my husband decided that he didn't like the sound of "Delilah Susan."  It's too clunky, and with our last name (Three syllables, very Irish, starting with an O') ends up being a mouthful.  I can see where he's coming from, but I'm still really attached to Delilah Susan. He has suggested as an alternative "Delilah James."  I think this sounds cute but I have three concerns with it:

  1. I'm not a huge fan of boy names on girls, though I'm less averse to them as middle names, and I like the meaning of this one.
  2. I think it sounds overly trendy, maybe even bordering on trashy.
  3. Delilah being somewhat uncommon, I would like her to have a traditional middle name.  In case she decides that a more traditional name would suit her better as an adult, she can use her middle name.

I feel like it's unfair of me to say he can't use his name as our child's middle name, and every single person we've run these names by has preferred Delilah James.  But I can't quite give up on Delilah Susan.

So, opinions, please:  Delilah Susan or Delilah James?

Re: MN dilemma

  • Delilah James is cute and quirky, but I think Delilah Susan sounds just fine. maybe you can soften it and he would get into it more.

  • I think either would work, but I also found that  Jacqueline is a feminine form of Jacques, which is a variant of James and Jacob according to many sites. https://www.babynamewizard.

  • I like Delilah Susan, if he feels like it is too clunky could you do Delilah Sue? I also like James as a mn for a girl, I think it is sort of cute. It's my H's middle name and I've thought about using it if we have another girl (since DD has my mn), bu

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll bring them all up with DH and see where it leads.  We've got a few weeks to narrow it down, and I have a feeling the discussion is going to get intense!

  • I think Delilah James flows better, so what about Delilah Jane?  Delilah Joan?

  • I'm hypothetically planning on naming a future girl MN James after my dad. So I don't think it is weird. If she wants for some reason to ditch Delilah and go by her middle name she could always go by Jamie. However, I don't see that happening. Delilah, an
