Shampoo and Conditioner

I asked my OBGYN if I need to watch out for shampoos and conditioners that might not be safe while pregnant and she said "no." She is one of those "women have been giving birth for forever in all sorts of conditions and we all turned out fine" kind of doctors which I like...I currently use Pantene and wash my hair every other day washing it every day isn't the best for it anyway...

I'm just curious, have any of you out there kept or changed your beauty products since getting pregnant?

Re: Shampoo and Conditioner

  • I've switched to a simpler moisturizer and will change shampoos when I run out. It's something I was already considering but this gave me extra incentive. I already use other "safe" products.

  • How can shampoos and conditioners be unsafe? Honest question...this is my 3rd pregnnancy and my doctors have never mentioned this before. Same question for makeup.
  • I thought about the same thing. I haven't switched shampoos but did switch to Burt's Bees lotions and an all natural face cream, just because it goes on my skin and don't want too many weird chemicals absorbed by my skin. I wear gloves when cleaning to. P
  • No I have not changed any part of my beauty routine. And for PP who asked why the OPs question: some pearl clutchers claim the chemicals used in some beauty products have a slight chance of being absorbed into the body and passing thru the placenta to bab

  • Nope. My thoughts are that I rinse it out after like 30 seconds anyway and only wash my hair 2-3x/wk (dry shampoo 1x/wk). My current shampoo is already sulfate free. The only thing I gave up was hair dye, Botox and my acne cream with retinoids in them.

  • Good to hear that I am not the only one that is not concerned with make up and shampoo and conditioners. To each their own..but I just don't think some of this stuff we are "supposed" to avoid is legit. You have to draw a line somewhere. Maybe I don't wor
  • I already use safe/well-rated/organic products without parabens and sulfates as much as I possibly can.

Also, it's going to take a month or more for you to notice any difference if you cut down the number of times per week that you're shampooing

  • My doctor laughed at me when I asked this question and told me to step away from the Internet! She is very liberal to begin with but told me to keep my routine.
  • I would be very upset to hear I had to stop using the same products I have been for at least 10 years. Not happening!

  • This is a serious question? I am pretty sure if shampoo and conditioner was unsafe there would alot fewer people in this world...

  • WTF.  No.

  • How are these chemicals harming us?
  • I had thought the same thing. I use a "blonde" shampoo it hopes that it will help keep my hair somewhat lightened so I wont feel the need to get highlights, but I had also wondered if it is safe.
  • Apparently some of the chemicals used in beauty products have caused birth defects in rats (since you can't really test on a pregnant woman)...I believe I read it here on TheBump.com when I did a quick google search before asking my doctor. I don't kno
